Today's game marked the 43rd meeting between the UMass Boston Beacons and the University of Southern Maine Huskies. UMass Boston leads the overall series 26-14-3. The draw snaps the Huskies 12-game losing streak to the Beacons. The Beacons had won 12 consecutively over the Huskies, and had defeated Southern Maine 5-0 in 2024. Southern Maine last defeated UMB, 1-0, on September 29, 2012.
How It Happened:
- The Huskies got off the mark early when Lenge headed in his fifth goal of 2025 off of a corner kick service from junior Jack Brady (Jensen Beach, Fla.) in the ninth minute.
- Southern Maine came out on the front foot and registered the first two shots of the game, and then earned the corner setting up the Brady to Lenge connection in the opening nine minutes of the contest
- After the Huskies' goal, UMass Boston controlled play, rifling off numerous shots before Ryan Lima connected on a far post marker in the 30th minute to tie the game up at 1-1.
- Action slowed for the next 11 minutes before the Huskies were awarded a free kick just outside of the area in the 42nd. Setting up on the left side near the end line, Kelly lofted in a ball and Pashalidis got to it on the near post to give Southern Maine a 2-1 lead minutes before the halftime break.
- Holding a 2-1 lead Southern Maine had a pair of early chances in the 56th and 57th minute, but UMass Boston continued to push forward into the Huskies defensive third. Husky goalkeeper Gabe Wagner (Freeport, Maine) was outstanding in net making critical saves and playing smart defensively.
- The Beacons nearly had an equalizer in the 88th minute but UMB's Ryan Lima's attempt was headed off the line by Husky right back Liam Conneely (Weymouth, Mass.) to keep it 2-1.
- In the 89th, the Beacons earned a corner and then turned several shots on goal. Wagner made two brilliant saves in the flurry before Doherty was able to pick up a loose ball and drive it home for the draw.
