Southern Maine Battle to 1-1 Draw at Eastern Connecticut

Lenge Scores Sixth Goal of 2025


 
MANSFIELD, Conn.   -  Junior Exauce Lenge (Portland, Maine) scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 18th minute as the University of Southern Maine Huskies drew with the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Mansfield Outdoor Complex.

Tonight's game marked the 43rd meeting between the University of Southern Maine and Eastern Connecticut State University. The Warriors lead the overall series 32-6-5. Southern Maine earned a 1-1 draw at home against Eastern Connecticut in 2024, snapping a 15-game losing streak to the Warriors. 
 
 
 
How It Happened:
  • With little offensive action, the Huskies had the first two shots of the game in the opening 15 minutes.  Lenge gave Southern Maine a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute finishing an assist from junior Jack Brady (Jensen Beach, Fla.).
  • The Warriors looked to quickly even the score 13 seconds after the kickoff, but Eliot Melgars shot was stopped by Husky goalkeeper Gabe Wagner (Freeport, Maine). Lenge's goal was the Huskies' final shot of the opening half, while ECSU turned one more on frame before the halftime break only to be stopped by Wagner. 
  • Southern Maine maintained its one-goal advantage until the 74th minute when Patricio Vidales scored his first goal fo the season with an unassisted strike to even the score at 1-1.
  • USM unleashed a duo of shots-on goal in the 81st and 83rd minute looking for the go-ahead goal, but ECSU keeper Jack Harmon made a pair of saves to keep the score even for the 1-1 final.

Inside The Stats:
  • Southern Maine held a slim margin in shots 10-8 over the Warriors, while the Warriors led in corner kicks 9-4. 
  • Leng's six goals so far in 2025 are the most by an individual player since the 2021 season when Zekariya Shaib scored six goals. Lenge has recorded a point in each of the Huskies' last five games (2-0-3).
  • USM's ninth draw of the 2025 season continues to stretch the program's single-season record for draws.

The Huskies remain on the road for its final regular season contest of 2025. Southern Maine travels to Plymouth State on Wednesday (3:00 pm). The 2025 Little East Conference tournament begins on Saturday, November 1.  Qualified teams, seedings, host-sites, and times will be announced prior to the start of the tourney.
