Lenge Goal Delivers 1-0 Win for Southern Maine Over VTSU-Castleton

GORHAM, Maine  -  Junior Exauce Lenge (Portland, Maine) scored in the 61st minute to break a scoreless battle and lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a critical 1-0 win over the Vermont State University Castleton Spartans in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

The Records:
VTSU-Castleton (5-9-1, 0-6 LEC)
Southern Maine (3-4-7, 2-1-2 LEC)

Tonight's game marked 15th meeting between the Huskies and the Spartans. Castleton leads the series 8-4-3. In 2023, the Huskies battled VTSU-Castleton to a 0-0 draw, snapping a three-game skid to the Spartans. VTSU-Castleton defeated Southern Maine 2-0 in 2024. Today's win is the first for Southern Maine over the Spartans since a 2-1 win in 2018.

How It Happened:
  • The Spartans earned the first chance of the game with a corner kick in the fourth minute, but after that Southern Maine dominated possession outshooting VTSU-Castleton 10-2 in the opening half.
  • Despite putting six shots on frame in the first 45, the Huskies found themselves tied at 0-0 at the break. VTSU-Castleton goalkeeper Xander Berthiaume turned in a strong performance throughout the game for the Spartans, and made six first-half saves.
  • Lenge broke through for the Huskies in the 61st, scoring his fourth goal of the season, hitting a low driven show from the top right corner of the box to the opposite post for the game-winner.
  • After Lenge's maker, the Huskies' defense and sophomore goalkeeper Gabe Wagner (Freeport, Maine) held the results.  The Huskies limited the Spartans to just one shot in the second half, and while Wagner was called upon to make just one save, he played strong defensively clearing threats.
