GORHAM, Maine – Freshman
Lucy Wiles (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy) scored 19 points, and had eight rebounds and four assists to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 63-56 win over the Plymouth State University Panthers in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Hill Gymnasium.
Wiles was 5-for-9 from the field and a solid 8-for-9 from the free throw line for USM. Freshman
Dakota Shipley (Bath, Maine/Brunswick) added 11 points, five rebounds four steals and a blocked shot. Senior
Maddy York (Nobleboro, Maine/Lincoln Academy) and graduate student
Liz Cote (Conway, N.H./Kennett) each had nine points. Cote was 4-for-8 from the field, while York went 3-for-5 off of the bench from three.
Ashley Stephens led Plymouth State with 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting off of the bench for the Panthers. She added seven rebounds, and three steals. Hailey Malozzi had 18 points and seven rebounds, while Elli Cox chipped in with eight points on 3-for-6 shooting.

SERIES HISTORY: Today's game marked the 102nd meeting between the Plymouth State University Panthers and the University of Southern Maine Huskies. Southern Maine leads the overall series 94-8 and has won the last 14 over the Panthers, including a 65-55 win over Plymouth State in the 2024 LEC Quarterfinals on February 20, 2024.
How It Happened:
- Leading for a majority of the first quafter, Southern Maine found itself trailing the Panthers 14-12 headed into the second. Up 12-9 with 2:28 to play on a layup from Cote, the Huskies were outscored 5-0 by the Panthers in the final 1:53. Stephens scored all five of the PSU points.
- Raegen Peck hit a three on PSU's first possession of the second quarter extending the run to 8-0 and putting the Panthers ahead 17-12 early. However, USM responded with a 6-0 run on a three from York and a traditional three-point play from Wiles to lead 18-17.
- PSU snagged the lead right back on a pair of free throws from Vlahovic, but the Huskies again responded with a six-point swing on threes from York and Shipley for a 24-19 advantage with 4:53 to go until halftime. Ellie Cox scored a layup to pull PSU to within two, 26-24, with 2:44 on the clock, but USM outscored PSU 5-1 in the final minutes to lead 31-25 at the break.
- Scoring the first five points of the third, the Panthers pulled to within one, 31-30 on a three from Malozzi with just over two minutes played, but Wiles took over scoring six straight, including a three to lead 37-30 with 5:23 left in the third. From three, the Huskies outscored the Panthers 8-4 to lead 45-34 to start the fourth.
- Southern Maine grabbed its largest lead of the game, 49-35, at the 8:40 mark of the fourth quarter on a Wiles' layup. The Huskies remained comfortably in front and led by 14, 56-42, with 5:41 in regulation on a layup from senior Maria Degifico (South Portland, Maine). However, the Panthers continued to scrap and used a 13-1 run over the next 4:15 of play to make it a two-point game, 57-55, with 1:06 to go. The Panthers were 5-for-6 from the field during the run, and were led by six points from Stephens and four from Malozzi. Conversely, Southern Maine was 0-for-4 from the field and 1-of-2 from the free throw line with three turnovers.
- After PSU's Salzillo made it a one-possession game with a traditional three-point play, Southern Maine's Wiles and graduate student Francesca Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) each went 2-for-2 from the free throw line to put their team ahead 61-56 with 22 seconds remaining. The Huskies secured a defensive rebound on PSU's next possession and Wiles hit another set of free throws for the 63-56

- Southern Maine shot 37.3 percent (19-for-51) from the field and 29.6 percent (8-for-27) from three. PSU shot 36.7 percent (18-for-49) and 26.3 percent (5-for-19) from three. Both teams had more than 20 opportunities from the free throw line. USM was 17-for-21 (81 percent), while Plymouth State was 15-for-24 (62.5 percent).
- Southern Maine had a 37-30 edge in rebounds, and a 10-8 margin in offensive boards. Both teams scored five second-chance points.
