Salem State Slips Past Southern Maine 1-0

GORHAM, Maine – The Salem State University Vikings defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 1-0 on Saturday afternoon thanks to a goal by Ginger Osgood with 5:54 left in the third period. Salem State goalie Delaney Cox made 37 saves to earn the shutout. Fifth-year senior Haley McKim (Moncton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) had 13 saves for the Huskies.

Series History:
Today's win the second for Salem State in the all-time series. The Huskies lead the series 8-2-2.
 
The Goaltenders:
SSU: Delaney Cox (2-8-0): 60:00, no goals allowed, 37 saves
Southern Maine: Haley McKim (6-7-2): 60:00, one goal allowed, 13 saves
 
How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine had a 25-10 advantage in shots on goal over the first two periods, but Cox kept the Huskies off the scoreboard. The netminder for the Vikings made 16 saves in the second period and her team helped her out by blocking six shots before they could reach the net.
  • Osgood scored a short goal from scrum in front of the net with Isabella Gillis and Ava Calabria recording the assists. Cox made another six saves down the stretch and the Vikings continued to clog up the Huskies' shooting lanes to keep the score at 1-0.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Huskies were 0-for-2 on the power play and the Vikings went 0-for-1.
  • Southern Maine led 37-14 in shots on goal. Senior Ally Stymiest (Moncton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) led the Huskies with seven.
  • Junior Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) led the Huskies at the faceoff dot by going 15-for-23. Freshman Makenzie Woodford (Cornwall, Prince Edward Island/ Mount Academy) finished 10-for-15 on draws.  
  • Salem State blocked 17 shots in the game with Olivia Tednes leading the way with four.
