DANBURY, Conn.    –  Freshmen Dakota Shipley (Bath, Maine/Brunswick) and Lucy Wiles (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy) each scored a game-high 19 point to combine for 38 points as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the WestConn Wolves 64-51 in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.

SERIES HISTORY: Today's game marked the 71st meeting between the WestConn Wolves and the University of Southern Maine Huskies. Southern Maine leads the overall series 52-19, and is 11-3 in the last 14 meetings, including the last four consecutively.

How It Happened:
  • Outscoring the Wolves 15-8 in the first quarter, Southern Maine led WestConn by 12 points early in the second quarter, 23-11, on a three from Cote at the 8:16 mark. However, the Wolves outscored the Huskies 20-13 in the frame to erase their deficit and knot the game up at 28 heading into the halftime break. Dingle had all seven of her points for the Wolves in the second quarter.
  • Wiles started the Huskies' offense in the second half with a layup, and Shipley swatted away WestConn's first possession to set up a jumper from Stred before scoring a layup of her own for a quick six-point USM swing and a 34-28 lead with 7:51 remaining in the third.
  • WestConn responded however with a jumper from Alyssa Virtue and a three from Deona Carter to make it a one-point game 34-33 with 5:23 on the clock.  The Wolves 5-0 mini-run set up a nip-and-tuck game for the rest of the quarter as both teams exchanged baskets. Despite the back-and-forth offense, Southern Maine never relented the lead. WestConn's Rencher made it a one-point Wolves' deficit with a layup at the 1:37 mark, but the Huskies used an 8-1 spurt in the last 97 seconds to pull away and head into the fourth quarter up 48-40.  Senior Maddy York (Nobleboro, Maine/Lincoln Academy) and Cote each had a three, while Shipley canned a layup before time expired for the run.
  • The fourth quarter started slowly, and Rencher had the Wolves within two possessions, 50-44, with 6:01 to go with a layup, but the Huskies took control as Wiles took over scoring eight consecutive points on a pair of threes and a layup for a 56-44 USM lead with 5:03 to go.
  • After the Wiles' run, the Huskies never led by less than 11 points the rest of the way, and led by as many as 15 points, on back-to-back layups from Shipley before the Wolves scored the final bucket of the game for the 64-51 final.
