UMass Dartmouth (RV) Overpowers Southern Maine

 
 
 
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass.  –  Amaris Mills scored a game-high 17 points to lead the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs to a lopsided 78-38 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Thursday night at the Tripp Athletic Center.
 
Mills led a balanced offense for the Corsairs who have been in and out of the national rankings this season.  Mills was 6-for-11 from the field with four threes.  Jaelyn Lavigne added 15 points on 6-for-12 shooting as the only other UMD player in double figures.  Ten different players recorded at least two points for UMD.  Carly Whiteside had seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
 
Senior Francesca Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) led the Huskies with seven points.  Freshman Lucy Wiles (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy) had five points. Sophomore Emma Stred (China, Maine/Erskine Academy) and freshman Dakota Shipley (Bath, Maine/Brunswick) had seven and six rebounds each.

SERIES HISTORY: Today's game marked the 88th meeting between the Huskies and the Corsairs. Southern Maine leads the overall series 67-21, but UMass Dartmouth has won the last 14, including a 2023-2024 regular-season sweep – 76-64 on January 11 and 67-40 on February 10. 
 
 
How It Happened:
  • Trailing by eight, 20-12, after the first quarter, Southern Maine played evenly with the Corsiars in the second quarter and trailed by three possessions, 32-23, at the halftime break.  The Huskies shot a solid 45.5 percent (5-for-11) from the field in the second quarter to keep pace with UMD and were led by five points from Ramsdell.
  • The Corsairs closed the door on the game with a big third quarter, outscoring Southern Maine 28-8. The Corsairs were 9-for-12 from the field in the third.  Twenty six of the Corsairs 28 points were scored by bench players in the third.  Conversely, the Huskies struggled to put the ball in the basket going 2-for-13 in the third, and turned the ball over eight times.
  • Ahead 60-31 to start the fourth quarter, the Corsairs held for the win, outscoring USM 18-7 in the fourth for the 78-38 final.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Southern Maine shot 28.9 percent (13-for-45) from the field for the game and 2-for-16 from three.  The Corsiars shot 44.8 percent (26-for-58) and were 11-for-29 from three. 
  • UMD had a 43-28 advantage on the glass, including a 16-6 lead in offensive boards.  The Corairs scored 13 second chance points. 
  • Both teams turned the ball over with the Huskies making 25 miscues to the Corsairs 19.  UMD scored 23 points off of Husky turnovers, while Southern Maine scored eight off of the Corsairs.  
 
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine returns to action at home on January 18 (12:00 pm) against VTSU-Castleton in a Little East Conference contest. The Huskies will then host Plymouth State University on Wednesday, January 22 (5:30 pm) in a conference tilt before returning to the road on Saturday, January 25 (1:00 pm) for a game against Keene State.
