No. 9 Bates College Defeats Southern Maine 4-1

GORHAM, Maine – Four different players scored as the ninth-ranked Bates College Bobcats defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 4-1 in a non-conference field hockey game Tuesday night at Hannaford Field.
 
Bates scored twice in the first quarter and two more times in the second quarter in the win.  The Huskies held the Bobcats scoreless in the second half thanks in part to the outstanding goalkeeping effort from junior Eleanor Folsom (Winthrop, Maine) who made 13 saves in the contest.

Today's game marked the 64th meeting between the Huskies and the Bobcats.  Bates leads the overall series 45-15-4.  The Huskies last victory against Bates came on October 22, 2015  - a 4-3 overtime victory at home. Bates has won the last eight consecutively. 
 
How It Happened:
  • Bates' Anna Cote was awarded a penalty stroke and made the converstion in the 7th minute to put the Bobcats on the board.  Bates doubled its lead in the 13th minute when Elise Copeland redirected a pass from Sophie Julienne.
  • Southern Maine halved its deficit early in the second quarter as senior Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) rocketed in a shot from the top of the circle during a penalty corner.  Graduate student Jordan Cummings (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) earned the assist.
  • Bates responded with two more goals scoring in the 17th minute and the 25th minute for the 4-1 final.

  • Drinkwater's goal is the 38th of her career, and moves her into a three-way tie for fourth in Huskies' field hockey career records.  The Huskies' senior has 38 goals, 19 assists and 95 points in 70 career games.  Her 95 points are ranked fifth all-time, while her 19 assists are currently fourth.
  • Folsom's 13 saves are a career-high for the junior. She now has five double-digits save games in her career.
