Bates Earns 3-0 Victory Over Southern Maine

LEWISTON, Maine – Tife Agunloye had a goal and an assist as the Bates College Bobcats defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-0 in a non-conference men's soccer game Wednesday evening at Garcelon Field.

Today's game marked the 33rd meeting between the University of Southern Maine and Bates College.  Bates leads the overall series 17-9-7. Facing each other for the first time since 2013, during the 2023 season Southern Maine battled the Bobcats to a scoreless draw.    The Bobcats had won the last three consecutively prior to the 2023 result, including a 9-0 victory on October 16, 2013.  Southern Maine last defeated the Bobcats October 5, 2010 by the score of 2-0, and earned a 1-1 double overtime draw in 2009.
 
How It Happened
  • Southern Maine pressed early and had a solid look at the first goal of the game, but freshman Alex Graver's (Kingston, Jamaica/Jamaica College) attempt hit the cross bar in the fifth minute.
  • Kuenstler broke through for the first goal of the game in the 13th minute finishing an assist from Agunloye for his first goal of the season to put the Bobcats up 1-0.
  • After hitting the cross bar in the 52nd minute, Agunloye put one on frame in the 53rd to double the Bobcats lead.  Agunloye completed the assist from Sebastian Iacovitti for his fifth goal of the season.
  • Bates sealed the game in the 78th minute after Wilson Smith scored his first goal of the season off of a feed from Zach Perron for a 3-0 score.

Up Next:
Southern Maine opens Little East Conference play at home on Saturday, September 21 (1:00 pm) against Eastern Connecticut State. The Huskies continue in Little East Conference play the following Saturday (7:00 pm) at UMass Dartmouth.
