Tibbetts Goal Lifts Southern Maine Past UMaine Farmington 1-0


GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Norie Tibbetts (Skowhegan, Maine) scored the lone goal of the contest in the 33rd minute to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 1-0 win over the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers in a non-conference field hockey game Wednesday afternoon in Farmington.

Tonight's game marked the 64th meeting between the University of Southern Maine and the UMaine Farmington Beavers.  Southern Maine leads the overall series 40-16-8. The Huskies have won the last five games, including a 9-0 win at home on September 13, 2023.
 
The Goalkeepers:
SM, Eleanor Folsom, 30:00, 0 GA, 0 Saves; Katie Hanlon (1-0), 30:00, 0 GA, 2 Saves
UMF, Ella Grant, 60:00, 1 GA, 9 Saves
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Despite outshooting the Beavers and maintaining possession, including a 15-2 advantage in penalty corners, Southern Maine was unable to get a go-ahead goal in the opening half and went into the break tied with UMF 0-0. 
  • Southern Maine upped the pressure in the second half and broke through for the opening goal in the 33rd minute. Earning a penalty corner,  Tibbetts inserted the ball and  then received a pass from senior Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and slotted the ball home for a 1-0 Husky lead. 
  • The Huskies continued to pressure the Beavers in the second half, outshooting UMF 9-2, but Beaver goalkeeper Ella Grant turned in a stellar performance making six of her nine saves in the second half to keep the score at 1-0. 
 
Inside The Statistics:
  • Southern Maine held a 13-4 advantage in shots (10-3 on target) and had a 22-3 lead in penalty corners.  The Huskies outshot UMF 9-2 in the second half, and had 15 first-half corners.
  • Tibbetts has scored in the last two games for the Huskies. Both goals were assisted by Drinkwater.
  • Hanlon's win is the first of her intercollegiate career. The Huskies' rookie goalkeeper has played in five games for 120 minutes.  She has a 2.50 goals against average, and has made nine saves.
 
 
Up Next:
The Huskies head to Husson University on Saturday (12 pm), and then face Endicott on the road on Wednesday (7:00 pm).  Southern Maine returns home on Thursday, October 3 (7:00 pm) against Worcester State University.
