Huskies Draw Level with Bowdoin 0-0

GORHAM, Maine  –  Senior goalkeeper Hunter Stonebraker (Mont Vernon, N.H./Souhegan) made five saves and the University of Southern Maine Huskies earned a 0-0 draw with Bowdoin College Polar Bears in a non-conference women's soccer game Tuesday night at Hannaford Field.

The Huskies dominated possession and play in the second half, putting up 13 shots, including seven on frame, but were unable to get the go-ahead goal.  The Huskies are now 4-1-1 on the season.  The shutout is the second straight for Southern Maine, and the first of the season for Stonebraker.

The Records:
Southern Maine (4-1-1)
Bowdoin College (1-2-2)

Today's game marks the 31st game in program history between the University of Southern Maine and Bowdoin College.  Facing each other during the 2023 season for the first time since 2014, Southern Maine earned a 1-0 victory on the road for the first win by the Huskies over the Polar Bears in the series.  Tonight's draw is just the second in program history against the Polar Bears.  USM had previously tied Bowdoin 2-2 in double overtime during the 2005 season.

How It Happened:
  • In a evenly played first half, Southern Maine had five quality chances in the opening 10 minutes, including a near-goal from junior Riley Reitchel (Palermo, Maine/Erskine Academy) that hit the post in the ninth minute, a shot from senior Julia McKenna (Windham, Maine) was cleared off the line in a Bowdoin team save, and a shot off the cross bar from senior Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine) in the 20th minute.   Bowdoin also had a close call as Jackie Shores had a shot from distance in 13th minute hit off of the cross bar.
  • Despite the chances the game remained 0-0 at the half. Southern Maine held a narrow 10-7 lead in shots, and both teams were had four shots on frame.
  • The field tilted in favor of Southern Maine in the second half with the Huskies controlling possession.  USM registered four shots early, and went on to outshoot the Polar Bears 13-2 in the second half. Bowdoin goalkeeper Charlotte Iannone made seven second half saves to keep the Huskies off the board.
  • Iannone's best save of the night came in the 74th minute when she made a leaping save up and over the cross bar on a shot on frame from Husky senior back Mia Sargent (Portland, Maine/Deering).

The Goalkeepers:
BC, Charlotte Iannone (1-2-2), 90:00, 0 GA, 10 saves
SM, Hunter Stonebraker (1-0-1), 90:00, 0 GA, 5 saves

Inside The Stats:
  • Stonebraker's shutout is her first of the season and the third of her career. She previously had two shutouts as a rookie in 2021 (6-0 vs. Eastern Nazarene; 2-0 vs. Maine Maritime).
  • The Huskies have hit the crossbar or post seven times this season.

Up Next:
The Huskies begin their Little East Conference competition on the road at Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday, September 21 (1:00 pm), and then return home on Wednesday to take on nationally-ranked Hartford University at 4:00 pm.  Southern Maine returns to LEC action on Saturday (1:00 pm) against UMass Dartmouth.  Southern Maine's senior student-athletes will be recognized prior to that game for Senior Day
