Southern Maine Splits Tri-Match with Mass. Maritime and Trinity

GORHAM, Maine – Junior Drew Johnson (Pismo Beach, Cali. /Brewer) and sophomore Darrien Pugsley (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) each reached double figures in kills as the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's volleyball team earned a non-conference win of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Buccaneers in straight sets as part of a tri-match on Saturday. Sophomore Tiara Begishe (Shonto, Ariz./Monument Valley) contributed 30 assists in the win over Mass. Maritime and fifth-year senior Sierra Castonguay (Nottingham, N.H./Dover) added seven aces and nine digs.
 
The Huskies lost their second match of the day to Trinity College 3-0.

The Records:

Series History:
The Huskies are now 7-0 all-time against the Buccaneers and have not ceded in a set in the series.
 
How It Happened:
  • The Huskies broke a 13-13 tie with a 10-0 run that featured two kills by Johnson, two Castonguay aces, and the duo of senior Madison Zimmer (Regina, Saskatchewan/Dr. Martin LeBoldus Catholic) and sophomore Anyelis Hernandez (Lawrence, Mass.) teaming up for two blocks. The Huskies withstood a late comeback attempt by the Buccaneers and won the set 25-18.
  • Southern Maine scored the first three points of the second set and never trailed on their way to another 25-18 set win. The Huskies largest lead of the set was 12 points (15-3). Johnson had six kills in the set.
  • The scoreline once again read 25-18 after the third set and, like in the second set, the Huskies never gave up the lead after scoring the first three points. Castonguay had three aces in the final set while sophomore Mia Mantini (Merrimack, N.H.) had two and Begishe had one.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Johnson's 12 kills led all players with Pusgley coming in second with 10. Hernandez added eight and Alanys Torres led the Buccaneers with seven.
  • Southern Maine had a season-high 15 aces.
  • Castonguay had a game-high nine digs while Shayla Narodowg and Audrey Manning each had eight for Mass. Maritime.
  • Maliah Servino had a solo block and two block assists for the visitors. The Buccaneers led 5-3 in total blocks. Zimmer had three block assists for the Huskies.

Series History:
Southern Maine and Trinity have now played three matches. The Bantams have won all three matches.
 
How It Happened:
  • The first set was 25-18 in favor of the Bantams. Trinity pulled away early with a 4-0 run to break a 2-2 tie and retained the lead for the remainder of the set.
  • The second set featured four lead changes. The Bantams rallied for five consecutive points to tie the set at 13-13 before a service error put the Huskies back head. The lead was reclaimed by Trinity shortly after with a 3-0 swing to put the visitors up 16-14. Back-to-back attack errors by Trinity made the score even at 16-16 before the Bantams took the lead for the final time and closed out the set 25-19.
  • Trinity pulled out a 25-21 win in the final set to take the match 3-0. The lead fluctuated between the teams until a kill by Eva Lekovic sparked a 6-1 run that gave the Bantams enough breathing room to hold off the Huskies and win the set 25-21.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Lekovic and Annette Schlunk each had nine kills for Trinity. Hernandez and Zimmer led the Huskies with six each.
  • The Bantams led in blocks 7-2 behind four block assists from Chloe Gentile and a solo block and a two block assists by Ellie Gordon. Schlunk also had two block assists.
  • Bella Caffuzzi had five kills to go along with a solo block and a block assist.
  • Scarlett Jago had 11 digs to lead all players followed by Castonguay with eight.
  • Grace Sullivan and freshman Macie Ahmer (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) led their respective teams with 12 assists each.

The Huskies will host Suffolk University on Thursday night at 7:00 pm.
