Huskies Battle UMFK to 2-2 Draw

GORHAM, Maine – Junior Samir Sayed (Portland, Maine/Waynflete) scored in the 79th minute to pull the University of Southern Maine Huskies even at 2-2 with the University of Maine at Fort Kent Bengals to earn a draw in non-conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

The Huskies battled back from a one-goal deficit twice in the contest with goals from Sayed and junior Kristof Manni (Vandalia, Ohio/Vandalia Butler).

Today's game marks just the second contest between the University of Southern Maine and the UMaine at Fort Kent Bengals. The Huskies and Bengals last faced each other in 1972 with Southern Maine earning a 2-1 win. Southern Maine leads the series 1-0-1.

How It Happened:

  • Manni countered for the Huskies in the 67th minute for the equalizer.  Freshman Martin Kelly (Portland, Maine) played a well-time through ball to Manni who scored his third goal of the season.
  • Less than a minute later UMFK retook the lead as Javel Clarke found the back of the net on an unassisted strike.
  • Sayed found the Huskies' equalizer in the 79th minute following a quick restart after a Bengal foul in Southern Maine's offensive third.  Carrying the ball to the endline, Sayed hit a far post ball for the second intercollegiate goal of his career.
