How It Happened: Southern Maine Rhode Island College
  • With Snyder leading off the game with an infield single, the Huskies chased RIC starter Taylor Babcock out of the game in the first inning.  After Snyder's single, USM loaded the bases with one out.  After a pitching change, and another out, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead when Snyder crossed home plate on a wild pitch. Southern Maine starter Lexus McIntosh (Lancaster, N.H./White Mountains Regional) countered with a one-two-three inning to end the first.
  • The Huskies scored four runs in the top of the second to take a commanding 5-0 lead in the elimination game with RIC.  Freshman Maddy Paradis (Salem, N.H.) singled through the right side to start the rally, while sophomore Olivia Levasseur (Amesbury, Mass.) picked up a walk.  The Huskies scored their first run of the inning on a passed ball, before junior Abby Miner (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) singled up the middle to put runners on first and third. Another wild pitch made it 3-0 for the Huskies and had Miner at second base.  With two away, Day stepped to the plate and after a lengthy at-bat laced a two-run home run over the fence in left field.
  • RIC cut the deficit to 5-1 in the bottom of the inning on a single down the right field line from Amanda Conti.  The Anchormen had a pair of singles, and a walk off of McIntosh in the inning, but the Husky sophomore bounced back to end the inning with a strikeout and a ground out.
  • USM remained in front through the third inning.  Following a 1-2-3 top of the fourth for the Huskies, RIC made some noise scoring three runs on four hits and a walk to make it a one run game, 5-4.  Katelyn Ashe and Sarah Mickelson and Conti went back-to-back-to-back for singles to start the inning.  Conti's single to centerfield was misplayed and the Anchormen scored two runs. Victoria Young had the fourth hit of the inning for RIC to drive in a third run, making it 5-4, and chasing McIntosh out of the game.
  • Entering the game with runners on second and third with no outs, Snyder came on and protected the lead. Snyder got Avery Katz to lineout into a double play to Day and Levasseur, and then ended the inning with a fly out to center field.
  • USM took one run back in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from Shields to lead 6-4.  Day led off with a single, and moved up to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt.  After a one-out walk, and a flyout, Shields hit one deep into shortstop for the RBI. With a two-run lead, Snyder worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth.
  • After a quiet sixth from both sides, USM added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Senior Rona Scott (Beverly, Mass.) and senior Makena Mulcahy (Auburn, Mass) each singled to start the inning.  Scott's base runner Kristina Yebba moved up to third on a fly out before Shields brought her home with an RBI sac fly to right and the 7-4 lead.
  • Snyder continued her strong relief effort in the seventh working around and infield single to get a ground out and a fly out to end the game and earn the win.
