GORHAM, Maine – Senior
Makena Mulcahy (Auburn, Mass.) and
Madi Day (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) each had four hits as the University of Southern Maine Huskies combined for 21 hits over two games in a non-conference doubleheader sweep of the Colby College Mules on Sunday afternoon. Southern Maine defeated the Mules 7-3 in the opener and then blanked Colby 6-0 in the second game.
Mulcahy was 4-for-7 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI, while Day went 4-for-5 with two runs scored, three walks and an RBI. Senior
Meaghan Dufresne (Mattapoisett, Mass.) drove in three runs on 2-for-7 hitting, while junior
Abby Miner (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) had a pair of RBI in a 3-for-7 effort at the plate.
Freshman
Abby Lee (Southington, Conn.) earned the win in game one pitching 2.2 innings of one-hit scoreless relief. Sophomore
Lexus McIntosh (Lancaster, N.H./White Mountains Regional) fired a three-hit shutout in game two, picking up seven strikeouts against one walk.

Today's doubleheader marked the 66
th and 67
th meeting between the University of Southern Maine and Colby College. Colby leads the series 34-33. The Mules has won the last three over the Huskies, prior to today's sweep.

How It Happened: Game One –Southern Maine 7 Colby 3
- Trailing 3-1 after four and a half innings, the Huskies scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take control of the game. Scoring all five of their runs on two outs, the Huskies had five hits, and two walks in the inning. Miner led off the inning drawing a walk for the Huskies, but Colby looked to be on their way out of the inning after getting the next two outs. Senior Hannah Shields (Buckfield, Maine) singled to keep the inning alive before Mulcahy doubled to the gap in right for two RBI. Dufresne followed with a double of her own to the same spot scoring Mulcahy to put USM ahead 4-3.
- Sophomre Mackenzie Renner (Alton, N.H./Prospect Mountain) singled up the middle on to drive in Dufresne, and freshman Laura Perrault (Biddeford, Maine) had a pinch-hit RBI double through the left side to score Renner giving USM a 6-3 advantage.
- Lee retired the Mules in order in the top of the sixth on a foul out and back-to-back groundouts, and the Huskies added another run in the home half of the inning on a single up the middle from Dufresne to lead 7-3. In the top of the seventh, Lee faced a bit of a jam loading the bases with a single and two walks around a pair of fly outs, but was able to retire the side on another fly out to left for the win.
How It Happened: Game Two – Southern Maine 6 Colby 0
- Locked in a scoreless pitcher's duel after five and a half innings, Southern Maine exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth and rode the arm of McIntosh to the win.
- Both sides went down in order in the fifth inning as Colby's Payton Crowley held USM to four singles in five innings, while McIntosh allowed two hits and had seventh strikeouts.. McIntosh continued to roll in the sixth getting three consecutive outs, including an assist on the final play. The Huskies bats came alive in the sixth, collecting five hits off of the Mules. Dufresne drove in the first run with an RBI fielder's choice before freshman Maddy Paradis (Salem, N.H.) made it 2-0 with a single through the left side. A sacrifice fly from sophomore Olvia Levasseur (Amesbury, Mass.) made it 3-0. Miner laced a single to center field to drive in two runs, followed by Days single up the middle for the 6-0 lead. Day led off the inning with a single and scored the first run.
- In the top of the seventh, McIntosh continued to roll and picked up her fourth shutout of the season.
