GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore
Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony0 drove in seven runs over two games going 5-for-8 from the plate with three doubles, a triple and five runs scored as the University of Southern Maine Huskies swept the Vermont State University Castleton Spartans in a Little East Conference doubleheader, 14-7 (7 innings) and 9-8, Saturday afternoon at Ed Flaherty Field.
Prior to the game, the University of Southern Maine recognized head coach Ed Flaherty for his outstanding 39 seasons as the Huskies' bench boss. Flaherty will retire at the end of the 2024 season.
Junior
Clay Robbins (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) was tremendous in game one setting a career best with 11 strikeouts to help the Huskies to a seven-inning 14-4 win over the Huskies. Going the full seven, Robbins held the Spartans to six singles and a pair of walks.
In game two, senior
Matt Burnett (Ellsworth, Maine) earned the win in relief pitching the final 3.2 innings as the Huskies earned the 9-8 walk off on a sacrifice fly RBI from senior
Christian Siciliano (Shrewsbury, Mass./St. John's). Burnett allowed just one hit and one walk in the win, and had four strikeouts.

Today's games marked the 37
th and 38
th meeting between the Huskies at the VTSU-Castleton Spartans. Southern Maine leads the overall series 26-12, and has won 11 of the last 12 contests over the Spartans. The Huskies swept VTSU-Castleton (7-5, 8-4) during the 2023 regular season

Game 1 – Southern Maine 14, VTSU-Castleton 4 (7 inn)
- After giving up three runs to trail the Spartans 3-0 after the first inning, Southern Maine roared back to down VTSU-Castleton 14-4 in seven innings. The Huskies collected 11 hits off of the Spartans, including six for extra bases.
- USM took one run back to trail 3-1 in the bottom of the second on an RBI double from senior Jack LeBlond (Lewiston, Maine/Bridgton Academy) and then grew its lead to 7-3 with the the first of two six-run innings in the bottom of the fourth.
- Scoring all six of its runs with two outs, Southern Maine's LeBlond started the rally drawing a walk and then scoring on an RBI single from senior Lucas Francis (Lisbon, Maine/Lisbon Falls). Sophomore Chris Quigley (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) had an RBI double to center to make it a 3-3 game. An error and a walk followed Quigley loading the bases for the Huskies and Douin cleaned it up with a three-run triple to the gap in right field for a 7-3 Husky lead.
- USM tacked on another run with a solo home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth from Siciliano to lead 8-3.
- Held scoreless since the first inning by Robbins, who retired nine consecutively from the third through fifth inning, the Spartans made it a four-run game, 8-4, in the top of the sixth on an RBI sacrifice fly from Mikey Raby Jr..
- After a quiet bottom of the sixth from the Huskies, Robbins worked around a lead off single, getting a line-out double play and picking up his 11th strikeout of the game to send the game into the bottom of the seventh.
- The Huskies invoked the 10-run rule in the seventh scoring six runs on four hits and a pair of hit batters. Douin had a three-run double to center to give USM an 11-4 lead, and junior Anthony Poole (South Portland, Maine) made it 12-4 with a single up the middle to score Douin. With a runner-on and two outs, senior Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) ended the game with a two-run hmoe run over the center field wall for the 14-4 final.
Game 2 – Southern Maine 9, VTSU-Castleton 8
- Again down 3-0, this time after two innings, Southern Maine led the Spartans 8-3 scoring six runs in the third and two in the fourth.
- Collect five hits, three for extra bases, in the bottom of the third, the Huskies had an RBI double from Douin, an RBI single from Poole, an RBI double from Seymour, and a two-run triple to the gap in right from Quigley to lead 5-3. Francis drove in USM's final run of the inning with an RBI ground out to short, and a 6-3 Husky advantage.
- USM started the fourth with singles from sophomore Hunter Brissette (Lisbon, Maine/Lisbon Falls) and Poole, before Seymour picked up two more RBI with a single to right for an 8-3 lead.
- The Spartans rallied to tie the game with two runs in the top of the fifth, and three in the sixth. In the sixth, the Spartans had three hits, and two walks to generate their offense. Jackson Cardozo had an RBI double down the right field line to start the scoring, while Tyler McLain's single through the left side made it an 8-7 game. Castleton's Brandon Ramirez tied the game up at 8-8 with an RBI ground out before the Huskies got out of the inning. The Spartans had runners on second and third after Ramirez's ground out with just one out before Burnett entered the game, getting the Huskies out of the game with back-to-back strikeouts.
- With the exception of a one-out walk to the Spartans in the sixth, both sides went down quietly through the top of the ninth. In the home half of the inning, Douin led off with a seeing-eye double down the right field line, and then moved up to third on a single to center field from Poole. USM loaded the bases on an intentional walk issued to Seymour setting the table for Siciliano who lofted a well-hit fly ball to center field to drive in the game-ending run.
INSIDE THE STATISTICS
- Siciliano now has two walk-offs this season. His first was a 5-4 10-inning win over Plymouth State earlier this month.
- Seymour now has six home runs this season, already the program's all-time leader he has 35 in his career.
- With seven RBI in today's games, Douin now has 60 for the season. The conference and team-leader in the stat, Douin's total is tied for 10th in single-season records with former All-American Nick Grady (2010-2013). The program record is 76 set by Husky Hall of Famer Anthony D'Alfonso in 2009.
