Douin Drives in 5 RBI; Burnett Fires 3.0 Innings of Scoreless Relief to Earn Win

How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine took an early 2-0 lead in its first at bat as Douin and senior Jack LeBlond (Lewiston, Maine/Bridgton Academy) each had RBI singles as part of a three-hit top of the first.
  • Husson responded scoring five unanswered runs over the second and third innings to lead 5-2. The Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the second loading the bases on back-to-back walks and a bunt. Austin Snow drove in the first run with an RBI single to center field, and was followed by an RBI walk from Akira Warren and an RBI sacrifice fly from Tanner Evans. Up 3-2, the Eagles took a 4-2 lead scoring an unearned run on a passed ball. Husson extended its lead to 5-2 with an unearned run on a throwing error in the third.
  • Husky senior Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) trimmed USM's deficit to 5-3 with two-out solo home run in the top of the fourth, but the Eagles answered with two more runs in the home half of the fourth on a single from Colin Marshall to lead 7-3.
  • Holding the Huskies scoreless in the top of five, Husson continued to extend its lead to 9-3 following a two-run home run to left from Jackson Curtis.
  • USM scored three runs in the top of the sixth to cut its deficit to 9-6.  Junior Joe Bova (Boston, Mass./The Winchendon School) and Brissette led off the inning with a double and a single to give the Huskies baserunners.  A fielding error on an RBI infield grounder from Seymour, a RBI ground out from sophomore Anthony Poole (South Portland, Maine) and an RBI single up the middle from Douin accounted for the Southern Maine runs.
  • The score remained 9-6 in favor of the Eagles over the next inning and a half. With the Huskies down to their final six outs, Brissette led off the eighth with a solo home run, making it a two-run game, 9-7.  After an out, Poole hit a triple to the gap in right and came around to score on a wild pitch.  The Huskies had one more baserunner in the eighth but were unable to secure the game-tying run.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Burnett got the first batter on strikes before allowing a triple.  Unphased, Burnett forced back-to-back groundouts to end the inning and keep the Huskies within a run headed into the top of the ninth.
  • Down 9-8, senior Christian Sciliano (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had a pinch-hit single down the left field line to start the inning for the Huskies, and sophomore Chris Quigley (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) gave USM to baserunners with a single.  After one out, Brissette stepped in and doubled to right to score the Huskies' lead runner making it a 9-9 game.
  • Husson elected to intentionally walk Seymour to load the bases, and then recorded the second out of the inning on an infield fly.   With the Huskies down to their last out, Douin tripled in three runs scoring Seymour, Brissette and Quigley giving USM its first lead, 12-9, since 2-0 in the first.  Douin scored USM's final run of the game on a fielding error.
  • Burnett was solid against the Eagles in the final at bat, recording the first out on a grounder to second. After giving up a walk, Burnett forced Husson into a game-ending double play started from shortstop for the 13-9 final.
