Colby Completes Comeback Defeats Southern Maine 5-3

Cam Seymour Hits Career Home Run Number 30

WATERVILLE, Maine –  Matthew Scibilio threw 3.2 innings of solid relief, allowing just two hits and striking out 10, to earn the win as the Colby College Mules rallied from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies 5-3 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at Coombs Field.

Designated hitter Noah Reichman drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-run double to right field in the bottom of the seventh to complete the Colby comeback.

Outhittiing the Mules 12-6, four Huskies had two hits in the game. Senior Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) was 2-for-5 with an RBI and one run scored, while junior Anthony Poole (South Portland, Maine) and Dylan Firmin (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) each finished 2-for-4.  Sophomore Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) was 2-for-5.

How It Happened:
  • After a scoreless first inning, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a lead off homerun from Seymour.  Despite threatening for more runs in the top of the third with three hits, and runners on first and third with one out, the score remained unchanged through 3 ½ innings.
  • Colby equalized with a run in the bottom of the fourth.  After a fly out to start the inning, the Mules earned two runners with a hit-by-pitch and walk.  Another fly out had the Mules down to their final out of the inning before Patrick Shrake connected on an RBI single to right before the side was retired.
  • The Huskies came back with two runs in the top of the fifth to retake the lead 3-1.  Southern Maine loaded the bases as sophomore Chris Quigley (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake Regiona) was hit by a pitch, Poole drew a walk, and Douin singled to left. With two outs left in the inning, senior Christian Siciliano (Shrewsbury, Mass./St. John's) drove in two runs with a single to right scoring Quigley and Poole.  The Huskies stranded its final to runners to end the inning with two runs on two hits with two left on base.
  • Husky starter graduate student Owen Sullivan (Biddeford, Maine) had a clean fifth inning, working around a two-out single, and picked up his seventh strikeout of the game to start the sixth before giving up back-to-back hits and his second run of the game.  Patrick McConnell collected a one-out single off of Sullivan, before coming around to score on a double from Tony Silva to make it a 3-2 game.
  • With a runner on second and one out, senior Matt Burnett (Ellsworth, Maine) replaced Sullivan getting a ground out to start before the Mules scored the game-tying run on a fielding error to make it 3-3.  Burnett ended the inning for the Huskies with another ground out.
  • USM had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the seventh but Scibilio worked his way out of it with back-to-back strikeouts.  In the home half of the seventh, the Mules surged ahead for the 5-3 lead.  Burnett retired the first batter via strikeout before putting two runners on with a hit-by-pitch and a walk, setting up Reichman for the two-run double to right field.  After Reichman's RBIs, Burnett settled to get the next two batters on strikes.
  • USM led off the eighth with a single from Quigley, but Scibilio took the next three Huskies on strikes, and in the ninth Scibilio shut the door with a ground out and two strikeouts around a walk for the 5-3 final.

Inside the Box Score
  • The Huskies left 14 runners on base.
  • The Mules used six different pitchers in the win. Colby's six pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts led by 10 from Scibilio.
  • Seymour's home run is the 30th of his career and first of the 2024 season.  He is now second all-time in career home runs for Southern Maine baseball.  Pete Misiaszek (1991-1994) holds the current program record with 32 in his career.
