Huskies Fall to Monks 28-11

STANDISH, Maine – The Saint Joseph's College Monks defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 28-11 in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon in Standish. Five Monks scored at least three goals led by Nathaniel Girardin with five and two assists. Matt Denman (four goals and two assists), Brandon Cavicchi (four goals), Tim Goodfellow (three goals and five assists) and Xavier Michaud (three goals and an assist) all had significant contributions to the Monks' impressive offensive output.
 
The Huskies were led by senior Schuyler Wetmore (Cumberland Center, Maine/Greely) with six goals and two assists to tie with Goodfellow for the game lead in points. Junior Aman Zunser (Lyman, Maine/ Massabesic) scored twice for Southern Maine.

The two Maine schools have now played 15 times with the Huskies leading the series 8-7.

How It Happened:
  • The Monks opened the game with five goals over the first five minutes of play and went on an 8-0 run before the Husky got on the board with a Wetmore goal. Saint Joseph's then scored three more times before allowing a goal by Zunser to end the first quarter ahead 11-2.
  • Saint Joseph's scored 10 more times in the second quarter with Girardin getting a hat trick in the frame. Goodfellow, Michaud and Cavicchi each scored twice in the quarter. Goodfellow also assisted on two goals.
  • Wetmore recorded both Southern Maine goals in the third quarter and the Monks scored three times.
  • The Monks closed out the game by outscoring the Huskies 4-3 over the final 15 minutes for the 28-11 final.

  • The Huskies also had goals from freshman Adam Coley (Valencia, Cail./Cheshire), junior Andrew James (Portland, Maine/Deering) and senior Omar Contreras (Portland, Maine/Deering).
  • The Monks led in ground balls 49-34. Zander Kirk paced Saint Joseph's with eight.
  • Saint Joseph's caused 16 USM turnovers with Nick Wesley being responsible for three.
