Huskies Drop Road Game at Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Drew Fleury scored six times and was one of 11 different Norwich University Cadets to record goals on Saturday afternoon in an 18-9 non-conference win against the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's lacrosse team. Senior Schuyler Wetmore (Cumberland Center, Maine/Greely) was the top scorer for Southern Maine with three goals and two assists.
 
Fleury also had two assists and was one of seven Norwich players to record multiple points in the contest. He was joined by Christian Rainis (one goal and three assists), Jack Haley (two goals and one assist), Tyler Seidel (one goal and two assists), Jackson Forbes (two goals), Matt Meehan (one goal and one assist) and Mitchell McKay (one goal and one assist).

Series History:
Today was the fifth meeting between Southern Maine and Norwich. The win for the Cadets gives them a 3-2 lead in the series.
 
The Goaltenders:
Southern Maine: Addison Dietz, 45:00, 15 goals allowed, 15 saves
Southern Maine: Wyatt McIntrye, 15:00, three goals allowed, four saves
Norwich: Luke Boland (2-0), 30:00, four goals allowed, seven saves
Norwich: Thomas Kelliher, five goals allowed, 10 saves
 
How It Happened:
  • Norwich raced out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter by outshooting the Huskies 15-5. Fleury bookended the scoring with goals in the first minute and the last minute of the stanza.
  • The Cadets scored another five goals in the second while allowing three to Southern Maine to lead 10-4 at the half.
  • The third quarter featured five more Norwich goals and a pair of down goals by Southern Maine. Wetmore and sixth-year senior Nick James (Portland, Maine/Deering) each scored a man-down goal for the Huskies.
  • Each team scored three times in the fourth quarter.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Mason McMahon, Christian Masonius, Chris Smith and Alex Johnston also had goals for Norwich while Luke Pineo recorded an assist.
  • James recorded four points with two goals and two assists.
  • Junior Aman Zunser (Lyman, Maine/ Massabesic) had a goal and an assist plus four caused turnovers.
  • Freshman Adam Coley (Valencia, Cail./Cheshire), junior Andrew James (Portland, Maine/Deering), senior Omar Contreras (Portland, Maine/Deering) and freshman Patrick O'Driscoll (Biddeford, Maine) each had one point for the Huskies. Coley had an assist while the other three each found the back of the net.
  • Thomas Muraski won 22 of 28 faceoffs for Norwich and recorded 16 ground balls.
  • McMahon caused a game-high six turnovers. As a team, the Cadets caused 15 turnovers and Huskies caused 13.
  • Sophomore Herb Bryant (Portland, Maine) caused four turnovers to tie with Zunser for the team lead. He also recorded four ground balls.
  • All 18 of Norwich's goals came at even strength despite the Cadets having eight extra-man opportunities.

The next contest for the Huskies will be at Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday at 5:30 pm.
