Huskies Dominate Beavers in 19-4 Win

GORHAM, Maine –The University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's lacrosse team cruised to a 19-4 win over UMaine Farmington on Wednesday afternoon behind eight goals from sixth year senior Rachel Shanks (Naples, Maine/Lake Region). Shanks was one of several Huskies with impressive performances in the non-conference victory. Senior Paige Rinaldi (Freeport, Maine) had an impressive all-around game with four goals, an assist, three ground balls and nine draw controls. Offensively, senior Kiaya Gatchell (Portland, Maine/Deering) distributed four assists while sophomore Elaina Hanselmann (Sanford, Maine) had a hat trick. Junior Anna Byers (Milford, Ct./ Joseph A. Foran) contributed two goals, an assist and six draw controls.
 
Ashlee Farrar scored three of UMaine Farmington's four goals and caused a pair of turnovers.

The Huskies are now a perfect 14-0 against the Beavers.

How It Happened:
  • The Beavers hung with the Huskies for the majority of the first period before Southern Maine pulled away. Shanks opened the scoring in the first five minutes with her 14th goal of the season. Rinaldi and Farrar then traded goals twice to make the score 3-2 before the Huskies closed out the first frame with a 4-0 run highlighted by three tallies from Shanks. Sophomore Raegan Bechard (Augusta, Maine/Cony) scored as well.
  • Shanks scored two more times in the second and Byers scored as well in the second period. Gatchell assisted on two of the three goals and Farrar netted the only Beaver goal of the quarter to make the halftime score 10-3.
  • The Huskies scored seven goals in the third with Shanks and Hanselmann each scoring twice. Sophomore Molly Black (Windham, Maine) had a goal and an assist and Rinaldi and Byers also scored. Two of the Southern Maine goals were scored with the Huskies playing shorthanded.
  • Hanselmann completed her hat trick just over five minutes into the fourth quarter from a feed by Rinaldi. Rinaldi then scored her fourth goal of the game to close out the scoring. Racine made three saves in the final quarter.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Byers, Rinaldi and the Huskies dominated in draw controls 17-8.
  • Senior Catriona Gould recorded the first point of her career with an assist on Hanselmann's second goal.
  • Hanselmann, Byers and Black each scored their first goals of the season.
  • McKenna scooped up the ball on six of the Huskies' eight draw controls wins.
  • The Huskies doubled the Beavers' caused turnovers total at 14-7. Gatchell and freshman Lizzy Hallee (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) each caused three turnovers.
  • Shanks' eight goals matches her career high and brings her career total to 199. Her next score will make her the second player in program history to score 200 or more goals joining Jessica Knight (207). Shanks' 241 career points are the second-most in program history behind Knight's 248.
