James and Wetmore Each Record 10 Points in Southern Maine’s 20-6 win over Husson

BANGOR, Maine – Schuyler Wetmore (Cumberland Center, Maine/Greely) and Nick James (Portland, Maine/Deering) each registered 10 points for the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's lacrosse team on Wednesday evening in a 20-6 win over the Husson University Eagles. Wetmore scored seven goals in the game and became the third player in program history to reach 100 career goals. James' stat line was split evenly with five goals and five assists. Matt Boynton contributed a goal and four assists for the Eagles.
 
Freshman Kaden Manning (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) recorded the first points of his career with two goals and an assist. Fellow freshman Patrick O'Driscoll (Biddeford, Maine) also scored twice and had an assist. Junior Aman Zunser (Lyman, Maine/ Massabesic) added two goals for Southern Maine.

How It Happened:
  • The Huskies scored the first three goals of the game with Wetmore netting the first and James scoring the next two. Husson made the score 3-1 with a goal by Nathan Vibber that was assisted by Matt Boynton before James and Zunser added two more Husky goals.
  • The second quarter featured the same score as the first with Wetmore scoring three more times and O'Driscoll and James also adding goals. James also assisted on two of Wetmore's goals. Owen Giorgio scored the Husson goal thanks to an assist from Drew Clinch.
  • Giorgio scored a man-up goal with an assist from Boyton 12 seconds into the third quarter, but the Huskies then ripped off a 4-0 run before Clinch scored for Husson. Manning then scored his first career goal with 18 seconds left in the quarter. He also assisted on a James goal for the first point of his career. Freshman Adam Coley (Valencia, Cail./Cheshire) had a goal in the third quarter as well.
  • Wetmore, Manning, O'Driscoll and senior Omar Contreras (Portland, Maine/Deering) had goals for the Huskies in the final quarter while Husson had goals Boyton and Kolton Gillilian.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Huskies had a slight edge in faceoff wins at 15-13. Senior Cayden Poisson-Bragdon (Lewison, Maine) went 11-17 with a season-high 10 ground balls. His total matches his career high.
  • Southern Maine played a great defensive game with season-high 15 caused turnovers. Freshmen Owen Gaulrapp (Windham, Maine), Colby Chavarie (Belgrade, Maine/ Messalonskee) and Jake Spalinger (Windham, Maine) each caused multiple turnovers, as did junior Duncan Hayes (Augusta, Maine/Cony) and senior Ryan Illig (West Newfield, Maine.Shady Nook Academy).
  • The Huskies led in ground balls 53-31 led by Poisson-Bragdon's 10. Chavarie and freshman Lucas Rego (Dracut, Mass./Lowell Catholic) each had five.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies play their first Little East Conference game of the season on Saturday at home against Massachusetts Maritime Academy at 1:00 pm.
