Douin Drives in Seven as Huskies Defeat Mitchell 13-3 (8 inn.)

AUBURNDALE, Florida –  Sophomore Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) went 4-for-6 at the plate, including a pair of doubles, and drove in seven RBI to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 13-3 (8 inning) win over the Mitchell College Mariners Sunday afternoon at the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale, Fla.

Junior Clay Robbins (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) had an outstanding start for the Huskies to earn the win and snap the Mariners four-game win streak.  Robbins picked up the win allowing just two earned runs in six strong innings of work, giving up two walks and striking out seven.  Freshman Carson Black (Porter, Maine/Sacopee Valley) and sophomore Matt Burnett (Ellsworth, Maine) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief to close out the game.

How It Happened:
  • The Huskies started on the front foot taking a 1-0 lead off of an RBI single from Douin in the top of the first, and adding two more runs to lead 3-0 following a two-run double from Douin in the top of the second.  The Huskies led 4-0 after the top of the third on an RBI single from senior Jack LeBlond (Lewiston, Maine/Bridgton Academy).
  • The Mariners cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth leading off the inning with a double from Michael Ficcocelli that was followed by a two-run home run from Cole Lalli.  Robbins settled into the inning after the two hits and retired the next three batters in order, including a pair of strikeouts.
  • Held scoreless in the top of the fifth, Mitchell took back another run in the home half of the inning.  Angel Galindez reached first on a Husky fielding error and came home on an RBI single from Chas Terni Jr. for a 4-3 game.
  • Neither team scored in the sixth, but the Huskies put up a crooked number in the seventh scoring five runs on four hits and a pair of walks.  Junior Joe Bova (Boston, Mass./The Winchendon School) led off the inning drawing a walk and moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Freshman Aaron Whitman (Bennington, Vermont) picked up Bova with an RBI single to start the rally.  Junior Anthony Poole (South Portland, Maine) made it 6-3 with an RBI single of his own, before Douin collected his fourth and fifth RBI of the game with a double, before senior Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) made it 9-3 with an RBI single.
  • Black entered the game in the seventh for USM, getting a flyout and two strikeouts around a hit-by-pitch to move the game into the eighth where the Huskies would add four more runs.  Whitman had an RBI single and Douin continued his outstanding day at the plate with another two RBI on a single for a 13-3 Husky lead.
  • With Burnett on the mound for the Huskies to start the bottom of the eighth, the Mariners were stopped as Burnett sat Mitchell down in order with a strikeout, fly out and ground out for the final.
