Huskies Take Down Pilgrims 3-1

HENNIKER, N.H. – Senior Maddy Young (Westford, Vt.) logged a goal and an assist on Friday night for the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's ice hockey team in a 3-1 win over the New England College Pilgrims in New England Hockey Conference action. Sophomore Isabella Colarusso-Sprang (Northfield, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) and graduate student Jordan Colbert (Manomet, Mass./Plymouth South) also scored for the Huskies. NEC's goal came from Meadow Gilchrist.

Series History:
Today's game marked the 45th meeting between the Pilgrims and Huskies with Southern Maine leading the series 24-18-3. Southern Maine has now won the last nine games in the series.
 
The Goaltenders:
Southern Maine: Haley McKim (10-7-2), 60:00, one goal allowed, 20 saves
New England College: Sean D'Urso (0-3-0), 60:00, three goals allowed, 44 saves
 
How It Happened:
  • The Huskies dominated the shots on goal in the first period 15-7 but were held in check by D'Urso. McKim also had a clean period with seven saves.
  • Young scored the first goal of the game 14:24 into the second period thanks to assists from juniors Amelie St-Amant (Cornwall, Ontario/ Ontario Hockey Academy) and Jess MacLean (Red Point, Nova Scotia/Rankin School of the Narrows).
  • The Huskies added a second goal less than two minutes later when junior Madelyn McLeish (Dedham, Mass.) chased down the puck and found Colarusso-Sprang in front of the net. Colrausso-Sprang's goal is her second of the season.
  • Gilchrist ended McKim's shutout bid early in the third period but the Huskies scored again in the final minute of action when Colbert knocked in her own rebound.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Huskies led in faceoffs 34-30 led by sophomore Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) and Young with 11 wins apiece.
  • The Pilgrims blocked 18 shots led by four from Olivia Lindberg who also had an assist for the Pilgrims.

The Huskies will wrap up the regular season tomorrow against No. 10 Norwich University at 3:00 pm.
