Huskies Hold Off Pilgrims 3-2 for Third Straight Win

GORHAM, Maine – Junior goalie Kyle Penton (Waltham, Mass./Albany Academy) matched his jersey number with 31 saves for the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's ice hockey team in a 3-2 New England Hockey Conference win over the New England College Pilgrims on Friday night at Gorham's USM Ice Arena. The Huskies had goals from sophomores Jakub Suran (Liberec, Czech Republic), John Hagan (Canton, Mass./Tilton School) and Conor Donovan (Nahant, Mass./Swampscott) in the victory. Junior Mathieu Sabourin (Alexandria, Ontario) assisted on the first two goals for Southern Maine.
 
The Records:
New England College: 4-19-1 (2-14-1 NEHC)
Southern Maine: 9-12-3 (6-8-3 NEHC)
 
Series History:
The two teams have now played 54 times with NEC leading the all-time series 40-7-7. The Pilgrims won the first game this season 1-0 on January 6.
 
The Goaltenders:
New England College: Danny Miscavish (0-8-1), 48:23, three goals allowed, 20 saves
New England College: Kai Tomita, 10:26, no goals allowed, four saves
Southern Maine: Kyle Penton (5-8-1), 60:00, two goals allowed, 31 saves
 
How It Happened:
  • Suran scored on the power-play 14:26 into the second period with assists from sophomore Kadin Ilott (Kenora, Ontario/Beaver Brae Secondary School) and Sabourin.
  • The Huskies scored again when Sabourin set up a breakaway for Hagan in the second period. The goal was Hagan's first on home ice as two previous goals came on the road. 
  • Donovan's goal came off the rebound of a Cole Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) shot with 12 minutes left to play. Senior Christopher Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Nichols School) also had an assist for his first point of the season.
  • The Pilgrims scored two power-play goals in the third period but could not complete the comeback.
  • Cam Perez and Ike Taraszewski had the goals for NEC while Gunnar Sibley, Connor Lefkof and Paul Waldhauser recorded assists.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The two teams combined for 35 blocked shots with the Huskies holding a slight 18-17 lead. Suran, Donovan and Sabourin each blocked two shots as did seniors Nick Nault (Goffstown, N.H.) and Zach Ellsworth (Saranac Lake, NY/Northwood School).
  • NEC scored twice on the power-play and the Huskies scored one in their four attempts.
  • Donovan's goal is the first game-winner of his career.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies have now won three game-in-row and wrap up the regular season tomorrow against No. 9 Norwich University. The team will honor its seniors and fifth-year players prior to the 4:00 pm puck drop.
