Southern Maine Battles No. 11 Elmira to 4-4 Draw

PINE VALLEY, N.Y. – Junior Sydnee Chaisson (Stratford, Prince Edward Island/Mount Academy) tallied a goal and an assist and fifth year senior Haley McKim (Moncton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) made 47 saves for the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a 4-4 tie with the No. 11 Elmira College Soaring Eagles. Elmira went on to win the shootout 1-0 to earn a tiebreaker advantage in the conference standings.
 
Junior Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) assisted on two goals. Senior captain Ally Stymiest (Moncton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy), junior Saige MacLeod (Dryden, Ontario) and sophomore Ellie Eigner (Bowling Green, Ohio/ South Lyon East)also had goals for the Huskies. Sabrina Shvartsman led Elmira's offense with a goal and an assist.

Series History:
This is the first tie in the history of the series. Elmira leads the all-time series 6-1-1. Elmira won the first meeting 4-0 on their home ice but the Huskies earned a 1-0 win in Gorham last season for their first win against the Soaring Eagles. The teams then met in the NEHC Championship Game with the Soaring Eagles winning the conference title 2-0.
 
The Goaltenders:
Southern Maine: Haley McKim (4-3-2): 65:00, four goals allowed, 47 saves
Elmira: Leonie-Louise Kuehberger (3-2-1): 64:53, four goals allowed, nine saves
 
How It Happened:
  • The first goal of the game was scored by MacLeod 4:41 into the first period with assists by Chaisson and Stewart. Elmira tied the score at 1-1 with a Shvartsman strike with 7:44 left in the period.
  • Annie Audet gave the hosts a 2-1 lead 8:35 into the second before Stymiest tied the game with a power-play goal with one second left in the period. Freshman Makenzie Woodford (Cornwall, Prince Edward Island/ Mount Academy) and Stewart recorded the assists.
  • The third period featured three goals in the first 91 seconds of action with two coming from Southern Maine. Chaisson jumped on a loose puck and scored on a breakaway 13 seconds into the third before Elmira countered with a Gabby Dougherty on the power play. The Huskies reclaimed the lead less than 30 seconds later off a blast by Eigner following a Joely Power (Clarenville, Newfoundland/Mount Academy) faceoff win.
  • Elmira tied the game with a goal with 8:15 left in regulation. The teams eventually went to overtime tied at 4-4 thanks in large part to 18 saves by McKim in the period.
  • McKim stopped four shots while Elmira had a skater advantage in overtime and finished the extra five-minute period with seven total saves.
  • Erika Goleniak scored the only goal of the shootout to give Elmira the win.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Elmira led 51-13 in shots on goal and 49-24 in faceoff wins.
  • The Huskies helped out McKim with 16 blocked shots in the game led by four apiece by Eigner and senior Amelie St-Amant (Ottawa, Ontario/ Ontario Hockey Academy).
  • Stymiest leads the Huskies with six goals this season.
