Rhode Island College Defeats Southern Maine 70-51

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island   – Madison Medbury led all scorers with 19 points as the Rhode Island College Anchormen defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 70-51 in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at The Murray Center.
 
Medbury was 7-for-12 from the field and 5-for-9 from three for the game-high total.  She added eight rebounds and seven assists.  Angelina Nardolillo added 14 points on 5-for-10 shooting to go along with 14 rebounds (six offensive) and five blocked shots.  Maggie Schwab tossed in 10 points, five rebounds and a blocked shot.
 
Southern Maine senior Francesca Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) led the Huskies with 12 points and two rebounds. Junior Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia/King's Edge Hill Academy) and graduate student Liz Cote (Conway, N.H./Kennett) each had 10 points.  Vaughan added three rebounds, three assists and three steals.

SERIES HISTORY: Today's game marked the 94th meeting between the University of Southern Maine Huskies and the Rhode Island College Anchormen. Southern Maine leads the overall series 69-25; however, Rhode Island College has won the last 11 games consecutively dating back to the 2019-2020 season.
 
How It Happened:
  • Rhode Island College scored the first six points of the game and built a commanding 24-9 lead after the first quarter. Medbury had 16 points in the first quarter, connecting on four threes.
  • In the second quarter, Southern Maine kept pace with the Anchormen with each team scoring 11 points. Cote and Vaughan each had three-pointers in the second.
  • The Huskies started the third quarter strong outscoring RIC 9-2 in the opening three minutes to cut their deficit to eight, 37-29, with 6:07 left in the quarter. Cote, freshman Lucy Wiles (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy) and senior Jade Smedberg (Oxford, Maine/Oxford Hills) each hit a three in the run. However, RIC closed out the final 5:26 on a 14-5 run to take a solid 51-34 lead headed into the fourth quarter.  Maggie Schwab led RIC with six points in the closing minutes of the third as RIC was 4-for-6 from the field (2-for-2 from three) in the run.
  • The Anchormen continued their strong offense scoring eight straight to start the fourth opening up a 25-point lead, 59-34 with 7:33 left in the game. Vaughan broke up the RIC run knocking down a pair of free throws and then banking in a three for a quick 5-0 swing for the Huskies to make it a 59-39 game.
  • The Huskies were able to get the game to a 15-point deficit, 61-46, on a three from Ramsdell with 4:29 to play, but RIC outscored USM 9-2 over the next 1:35 to lead by 22, 70-48. USM freshman Morgan Cunningham (Augusta, Maine/Cony) scored the final bucket of the game with a three for the 70-51 final.
 
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Southern Maine shot 29.3 percent (17-for-58) from the field and 37 percent (10-for-27) from three.  RIC shot 44.6 percent (25-for-56) and went 10-for-24 from three. 
  • Rhode Island College led Southern Maine in rebounding 47-27, and had a 12-8 edge in offensive boards led by Nardolillo's  six.  The Anchormen had 10 second-chance points.
  • Southern Maine won the turnover battled committing eight to RIC's 15.  The Huskies scored 16 points off of RIC miscues.
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine is hitting the road for its next two contests in December, traveling to Puerto Rico for the Puerto Rico Classico December 19-20. The Huskies will face Randolph-Macon and Ohio Wesleyan during the trip. The Huskies return to action at home on Saturday, January 4 (1:00 pm) against Little East opponent Keene State College, and then host UMass Boston on Wednesday, January 8 (5:30 pm).
