Strong First Half Leads Randolph-Macon Past Huskies 49-38

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico   – Catherine Kagey was 7-for-11 from the field for a game-high 18 points to lead the Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jackets to a 49-38 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's basketball game Thursday afternoon at the Coliseo Roger Mendoza for the 2024 Puerto Rico Classico. 
 
Graduate student Liz Cote (Conway, N.H./Kennett) led Southern Maine with nine points.  Freshman Dakota Shipley (Bath, Maine/Brunswick) had eight points.

SERIES HISTORY: Today's game marked the first meeting between the Huskies and the Randolph-Macon College Yellowjackets.
 
How It Happened:
  • The Yellowjackets jumped out to a 16-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and was able to maintain its lead for the rest of the game en route to the win. Randolph-Macon was 6-or-9 from the field in the opening quarter, and was able to hold the Huskies to just one field goal on 1-for-11 shooting.  The Yellow jackets opened the game 4-for-4 from the field and led 9-0 with 6:38 to play before the Huskies got on the board with a pair of free throws from Wiles.
  • The Huskies fared better in the second quarter and outscored the Yellowjackets 11-8 to trail 24-16 at the break. Cote and junior Julia Kratzer (Gorham, Maine) hit back-to-back threes to start the second quarter for the Huskies.
  • In the third, Randolph-Macon grew its lead to 30-16 scoring the first six points of the frame led by four points from Kagey.  Southern Maine cut its deficit to single digits, 32-23, with a 7-2 run highlighted by a three from freshman Dakota Shipley (Bath, Maine/Brunswick) at the 3:37 mark. However, RMC score the final four points of the quarter to lead 36-23 headed into the fourth.
  • Southern Maine outscored RMC 15-13 in the fourth, knocking down 3-for-6 from three-point range.  Freshman Lucy Wiles (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy), Cote and Shipley each had threes in the quarter for USM, but the Huskies could not overcome its early double-digit deficit to fall 49-38.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Southern Maine shot 26.7 percent (12-for-45) from the field for the game, and 31.8 percent (7-for-22) from three.  RMC shot 33.3 percent (19-for-57) from the field.
  • The Yellowjackets had a commanding 43-17 advantage in rebounding, including a 19-3 lead in offensive boards. RMC scored 16 second chance buckets.
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine returns to competition at the Puerto Rico Classico tomorrow, December 20. The Huskies will face No. 12 Ohio Wesleyan at 4:00 EST. The Huskies return to action at home on Saturday, January 4 (1:00 pm) against Little East opponent Keene State College, and then host UMass Boston on Wednesday, January 8 (5:30 pm).
