GORHAM, Maine – Sarah Hughes scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the No. 22 Bates College Bobcats to an 80-58 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's basketball game Tuesday night at Hill Gymnasium.
Hughes was one of three Bobcats in double-figuresl. Sophie Spolter had 15 points and five rebounds, while Alexandra Long added 13 points. Elsa Daulerio had a game-high 11 rebounds and nine points helping the Bobcats to a decisive 43-29 advantage on the boards.

Jade Smedberg (Oxford, Maine/Oxford Hills) each had 13 points for the Huskies. Cote added three rebounds and three steals. Smedberg's 13 points are a career-high as a Husky. She was 5-for-8 fromteh floor and 3-for-5 from three. Freshman
Lucy Wiles (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy) had eight points, four assists and two steals, while junior
Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia/King's Edge Hill) added eight points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Today's game marked the 59
th meeting between the University of Southern Maine Huskies and the Bates College Bobcats. Southern Maine leads the overall series 41-18. Bates has won the last four meetings consecutively, including a 67-60 win in Lewiston in 2023.
How It Happened:
- Bates led from start to finish and took a commanding 26-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Bobcats shot 78.6 percent from the field to open the game (11-for-14).
- The Huskies won the second quarter, outscoring Bates 21-18, but remained down by double digits 44-27 at the half. Smedberg had seven of her 13 in the second quarter shooting 3-for-3 from the field.
- The Huskies played even with the Bobcats in the second half. Bates outscoring USM 18-15 in the third, and 18-16 in the fourth for the 80-56 final. Cote scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half.

The Huskies start their month-long road swing at Saint Joseph's College (Maine) on Sunday, December 1 (5:00 pm), and then begin their Little East schedule with a road game at Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday, December 4 (5:00 pm). USM then faces nationally-ranked Rhode Island College in LEC action on Wednesday, December 11 (5:30 pm) before traveling to Puerto Rico for the Puerto Rico Classico December 19-20. The Huskies will face Randolph-Macon and Ohio Wesleyan during the trip.
