Saint Joseph’s Runs Past Southern Maine 68-38

GORHAM, Maine  – Angelica Hurley scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, both game-high totals, to lead the Saint Joseph's College (Maine) Monks to a 68-38 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's basketball game Sunday night at Mike McDevitt Court.
 
With the win, the Monks secured The Costello Cup for the ninth consecutive season.
 
Senior Luna Love (Zwolle, Netherlands/Center for Sports & Education) led the Huskies with eight points off of the bench. It marked the first action of the season for the Huskies' senior. Freshman Lucy Wiles (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy) added six points.

Today's game marked the 56th meeting between the University of Southern Maine Huskies and the Saint Joseph's College Monks.  Southern Maine leads the overall series 41-15. Saint Joseph's has won the last nine meetings consecutively, including a 53-52 win on November 26, 2023
 
Costello Cup: The Costello Cup is presented annually to the winner of the contest between the rival schools and honors the late Dr. Richard "Doc" Costello, former USM Athletic Director and long-time basketball coach for both the men's and women's programs. Tonight's win gives the Monks the cup for the ninth consecutive season, and the 13th time in the 33-game series for the Cup.   USM leads the series 21-13.  
 
How It Happened:
  • Hurley, Madison Lebel and Grace Ramsdell each had five points in the first quarter for the Monks as SJC opened up a 19-5 lead. The Huskies were just 2-for-10 from the field in the opening quarter.
  • The Monks continued to outpace the Huskies offensively and led 43-12 at the halftime break.  SJC outscored the Huskies 24-7 in the second quarter led by six points from Logan Brown.
  • The Huskies fared better in the second half, outscoring the Monks 26-25, but could not overcome their halftime deficit.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Southern Maine shot just 25.0 percent (13-for-52) from the field, and 7-for-25 from three.  The Huskies also struggled from the free throw line making 5-of-14 (35.7 percent).
  • SJC won the turnover battle committing just nine to the Huskies 16. The Monks scored 18 of their 68 points off of Husky miscues.
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine is hitting the road for its next four contests in December. The Huskies begin their Little East schedule with a road game at Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday, December 4 (5:00 pm). USM then faces nationally-ranked Rhode Island College in LEC action on Wednesday, December 11 (5:30 pm) before traveling to Puerto Rico for the Puerto Rico Classico December 19-20.  The Huskies will face Randolph-Macon and Ohio Wesleyan during the trip.
