Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Riley Driscoll, Athletic Media Associate

Big Second Period Leads Southern Maine to 3-2 Win Over New England College

HENNIKER, N.H.– The first goal for junior Audrey Donahue (Timberlea, Nova Scotia/ Kimball Union Academy) as a member of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's ice hockey team served as the game-winner in a 3-2 New England Hockey Conference win against the New England College Pilgrims. The Huskies trailed 1-0 early in the second period but scored three times in the period highlighted by goals from senior captain Ally Stymiest (Moncton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) and junior Saige MacLeod (Dryden, Ontario) less than 90 seconds apart. Donahue's goal made the lead 3-1 and provided necessary insurance as the Pilgrims scored in the third period to cut the lead to 3-2.

Freshmen Grace Inoue (Ottawa, Ontario/ Brewster Academy) and Makenzie Woodford (Cornwall, Prince Edward Island/ Mount Academy) also reached milestones with each player recording their first collegiate point. Inoue had an assist on MacLeod's tally while Woodford was credited with assists on the first and third Southern Maine goals.

Senior Ellie Fredenburg (Cambridge, Mass./ Cambridge Rindge and Latin) made her season debut and made 18 saves to earn the win.

How It Happened:
  • The teams ended the first period tied at 0-0 despite the Huskies doubling the Pilgrims' shots on goal total at 12-6. New England College blocked nine shots in the period.
  • The Pilgrims struck first 4:42 into the second period when Meadow Gilchrist cleaned up a rebound for the first goal of the game. Kate Devlin and Jessica Dutkus had assists on the goal.
  • Southern Maine answered with two goals in the span of 1:15. Stymiest tied the game with a laser that beat Armour top-right with an assist by Woodford. MacLeod then put the Huskies ahead 2-1 after maneuvering through the Pilgrim defense and finding the back of the net. Inoue and freshman Joely Power (Clarenville, Newfoundland/Mount Academy) had assists on the goal.
  • The Southern Maine lead was extended to 3-1 when Donahue came across the blueline to blast a one-timer past Armour following a failed clearing attempt by the Pilgrims on a power play.
  • New England College cut the lead to 3-2 with just under seven minutes left in the third period thanks to a power play goal by Jordan Pond from Olivia Lindberg. The Pilgrim's comeback attempt stalled out with two late penalties that hindered their ability to pull their goalie for a final charge to tie the game.
