William Smith Blanks Southern Maine 2-0

GORHAM, Maine – Erin Murray recorded a 17-save shutout for the William Smith College Herons on Saturday in a 2-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's ice hockey team in New England Hockey Conference play. William Smith's Bella Hacker scored the game-winner in the second period and Annabel Ziskin added an empty-net goal in the final minute for the 2-0 final.

Series History:
Tonight's game was the ninth meeting between the two teams. The Huskies hold a 5-4 lead in the series. Five of the games have ended in shutouts with the Herons now having three to the Huskies' two.
 
The Goaltenders:
William Smith: Erin Murry (2-3-0): 60:00, no goals allowed, 17 saves
Southern Maine: Haley McKim (3-2-1): 59:15, one goal allowed, 29 saves
 
How It Happened:
  • Both goalies were perfect in the first period with Murry making four saves and McKim doubling her total with eight.
  • Hacker collected a loose puck and fired a shot past McKim to give the Herons a 1-0 lead with 12:57 left in the second period. The Herons had a 5-on-3 opportunity in the period, but the Huskies held tight defensively to kill both penalties.
  • McKim was pulled in the final minute and Ziskin scored a long empty-net goal to make the score 2-0.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Neither team scored on the power play. The Huskies killed three penalties and the Herons killed one.
  • The Herons led 31-17 in shots on goal and 27-18 on faceoffs.
  • Junior Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) went 5-for-10 on draws to lead the Huskies.
  • The Huskies blocked 11 shots in the game led by three by Amelie St-Amant (Ottawa, Ontario/ Ontario Hockey Academy) and two by sophomore Shannon Murphy (Pembroke, Mass./Brewster Academy).

The Huskies will travel to Henniker, N.H. next weekend for a two-game series with New England College. The first game starts at 6:00 pm on Friday, November 22.
