GORHAM, Maine – Junior
Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia/King's Edge Hill) scored 12 of her game-high 21 points in the second half as the University of Southern Maine Huskies overcame a slow start to earn a 60-46 win over the Wheaton College (Mass.) Lyons in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.
Vaughan was one of three Huskies in double-figures in the win. Graduate student
Liz Cote (Conway, N.H./Kennett) had 15 points while freshman
Lucy Wiles (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy) continued her strong start with 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Wheaton was led by 14 points from Kiki Walter, and 12 points from Nasha Arnold.

Today's game marked the first meeting between the University of Southern Maine Huskies and the Wheaton College (Mass.) Lyons. Southern Maine now leads the series 1-0.
How It Happened:
- Southern Maine started out slow making just three first quarter field goals to trail the Lyons 20-9 headed to the second quarter.
- The Huskies changed course in the second quarter, outscoring Wheaton 15-4, to head into the halftime break knotted up at 24-24. Vaughan scored seven of the Huskies 15 points in the quarter going 2-for-3 from the field and 3-for-3 from the free throw line.
- Cote started the second half with a three on Southern Maine's first possession, but the Lyons led 40-35 with 1:40 to play in the third. Both teams battled back and forth in the third after Cote's three, and Southern Maine led 35-32 with just under six to go in the frame after another Cote three. However, the Lyons outscored Southern Maine 8-0 over the next four minutes and change to take the lead.
- With her team trailing, Vaughan took over in the final 1:40 of the third scoring the final six points of the quarter to give USM a slim 41-40 lead headed into the fourth.
- Both teams exchanged points and the lead to start the fourth, and Vaughan's two free throws at the 8:28 mark gave the Huskies the lead for good at 45-44. Cote quickly followed with a three to extend the lead to 48-44 at 7:45, and USM held the Lyons scoreless the next six minutes as part of a 16-2 run. Kiki Walters scored the final bucket of the game for the Lyons at the 2:18 mark to make it a 59-46 game, and USM scored one final free throw for the final to close out the game 60-46.
Inside The Stats:
- Southern Maine outscored the Lyons 36-22 in the second half, and 51-26 after the first quarter to secure the win.
- Led by Vaughan's 10-for-11 performance from the free throw line, Southern Maine shot an outstanding 80.8 percent from the charity stripe, making 21-of-26 attempts.
- USM outscored Wheaton 16-7 on second chance points, and scored 27 points off of Wheaton turnovers. USM committed 20 turnovers to Wheaton's 31.
