Strong Second Half Leads UNE Past Southern Maine 58-44

Wiles, Vaughan Score 11; Shipley Adds Eight For Huskies

BIDDEFORD, Maine  – Sydney Jenisch scored a game-high 18 points to lead the University of New England Nor'easters to a 58-44 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Alfond Arena.
 
The Huskies led UNE 25-20 at the half, but the Nor'easters outscored Southern Maine 21-8 in the third quarter, and 38-19 in the second half to take the win.
 
Freshman Lucy Wiles (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy) and junior Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia/King's Edge Hill) led Southern Maine with 11 points each. Freshman Dakota Shipley (Bath, Maine/Brunswick) added eight points.

Today's game marked the 54th meeting between the University of New England and the University of Southern Maine.  The Huskies lead the overall series 39-14, but UNE has won the last three games consecutively.
 
How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine scored the first four points of the game and led 6-2 after a driving layup from Vaughan at the 6:47 mark, before UNE closed out the quarter on a 12-4 run to lead 12-10 going into the second.
  • UNE went up 18-12 on a jumper from Faye Veilleux with 6:48 to play in the second, before Wiles canned back-to-back threes to tie the game and lead the Huskies to a 13-2 run to close out the half and lead 25-20 at the break. USM was 4-for-7 from the field during the run while the Nor'easters were just 1-for-12.
  • A Wiles' three had USM up by seven, 30-23, with just over 90 seconds gone in the second half, but UNE used an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to surge ahead 31-30 with 4:48 left in the third. Maddy Werner had seven points for the Nore'easters in the run.
  • Shipley made one of two free throws to stop UNE's run and tied the game up at 31-31, but UNE again pressed ahead this time with a 10-0 run to take the game away from Southern Maine and lead 41-31 with 1:26 remaining in the third. Jenisch had six of her 17 points in the pivotal run for UNE.
  • Ahead 41-33 to start the fourth, the Nor'easters continued to roll and opened with a 9-0 run to take their largest lead of the game 50-33 with 6:19 to play.  Jenisch had five points on a jumper and a three.
  • Shipley hit a three, and Vaughan connected on a layup to bring USM to within 12, 59-38, with just over five minutes to play, but Werner and Jenisch responded with back-to-back buckets to push the lead to 54-38.
  • Shipley again had USM to within 12 making a pair of free throws with 1:29 showing on the clock, but was as close as the Huskies would get in the 58-44 final.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Southern Maine shot just 28.2 percent (15-for-53) from the field, and 27.3 percent (6-for-22) from three-point range in the contest.  UNE was 33.3 percent (22-for-66) from the floor, and 6-for-16 from three.
  • Southern Maine committed 24 turnovers to 10 for UNE. The Nor'easters scored 22 of their 58 points off of Husky turnovers.
  • Led by Vaughan's eight rebounds, USM had a 45-39 advantage on the glass. Both teams had 14 offensive rebounds,
 
Up Next:
The Huskies host Wheaton College (Mass.) on Saturday, November 16 (2:00 pm).  The Huskies return to the road for a contest at UMaine Farmington on Wednesday, November 20 (5:00 pm) before hosting Thomas College on Saturday, November 23 (4:00 pm).
