Huskies Open Season with Dominant 41-12 Win Over Bridgewater State

GORHAM, Maine   –  Seniors AJ Robinson (Branford, Conn.) and Owen Bufagna (Newton, NH/Central Catholic) and sophomores Kyle Moore (Kennebunk, Maine/Division Avenue (NY)) and Derek Cote (Lebanon, Maine/Noble) each earned a win by fall as the University of Southern Maine Huskies rumbled to a dominant 41-12 season-open win against the Bridgewater State University Bears Friday night at Hill Gymnasium.

On the Mat:
  • Trailing 6-0 after the 125-pound bout, Southern Maine rattled off four consecutive wins to surge ahead of the Bears 20-6. Junior Jake Craig (Norridgewock, Maine/Skowhegan), a 2024 NCAA Qualifier and 2023 All-American, earned a win by technical fall overpowering BSU's Christopher Dubey 18-1 (2:51) at 133 lbs.
  • Moore pinned his opponent Malcolm Crispin in 3:44 at 141 pounds to give Southern Maine the lead 11-6, and his brother freshman Shane Moore (Kennebunk, Maine/Division Avenue (NY)) made it 15-6 with a strong 12-4 major decision victory in his collegiate debut.
  • Wrestling at 157, senior Colby Frost (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle), a 2024 NCAA All-American at 149 lbs, earned the Huskies' second technical fall victory of the match  outmaneuvering the Bears' Jonathan Clarke 20-3 (3:38).
  • BSU claimed the 165 pound bout in a come-from-behind victory from Nathan Quinones to trail Southern Maine 20-12, but the Huskies would claim 21 more points winning the final four matches for the 41-12 final.
  • Cote answered back for USM in the 174 pound class, pinning Michael Hopkins in 2:33, and was followed by a gutsy 5-2 win by decision for senior Tyler Haynes (Metuchen, NJ) at 184 lbs.
  • The Huskies closed out the match with back-to-back pins.  Robinson put BSU's Asante Sanders to the mat in short-order with a 29-second win by fall at 197 lbs, and was followed by an action packed win by fall in 1:24 from Bufagna in the heavyweight class.
