Stymiest Scores Twice as Huskies Open Season with 3-1 Win over UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Senior captain Ally Stymiest (Moncton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) scored a pair of power play goals to help lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-1 win over the University of New England Nor'easters on Friday evening at Biddeford's Harold Alfond Forum. Junior Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) also had multiple points with assists on both of Stymiest's goals. Fifth year senior Haley McKim (Moncton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) made 22 saves to earn the win.

The Records:
Southern Maine: 1-0-0
University of New England: 0-1-0

Series History:
The two local rivals have now played 23 times with the Nor'easters leading 11-10-2. The Huskies won both meetings last season with come-from-behind victories in each contest.

The Goaltenders:
Southern Maine: Haley McKim (1-0-0), 59:54, one goal allowed, 22 saves
UNE: Kirsten DiCicco (0-1-0), 60:00, three goals allowed, 31 saves

How It Happened:
  • A hooking call 4:15 into the first period put Southern Maine on the power play and Stymiest netted the first goal of the season for the Huskies with five seconds left on the advantage. Stewart and junior Sydnee Chaisson (Stratford, Prince Edward Island/Mount Academy) were credited with the assist on the goal. Chaisson redirected a Caroline Thompson (Victoria, Prince Edward Island/Mount Academy) shot towards the side boards and Stewart won the battle for the puck before Styimest corralled it and fired a shot past the UNE goalie from the middle of the zone.
  • Amanda Forziati evened the score at 1-1 with a goal with 7:05 left in the period. Hannah Humes and Emily LeBrun had the assists for UNE.
  • Stymiest added another power play tally with 28 seconds left in the second period with Stewart and Thompson assisting.
  • The Huskies scored again on the power play with 6:20 left in the third period when senior Jillian Jackson (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Ontario Hockey Academy) won a faceoff back to junior Saige MacLeod (Dryden, Ontario) who then fed the puck to senior Madison Chagnon (St. Albans, Vt./Rice Memorial). Chagnon, the team leader in goals in each of the past three seasons, then proceeded to bury a top-shelf goal to put the Huskies up 3-1.

Inside The Stats:
  • The Huskies went 3-for-4 on the power play while the Nor'easters did not convert either of their two opportunities.
  • Southern Maine had a slight 27-26 lead in faceoff wins led by nine from Stewart and eight from Jackson. Jamie DuPont went 11-9 on draws for UNE.
  • The teams were even in shots on goal through the first two periods, but the Huskies outshout the Nor'easters 15-5 over the final 20 minutes.
  • Humes blocked four shots for UNE.
  • Jackson's assist is her first point as a Husky after spending three seasons at Norwich University.
