Endicott Blanks Southern Maine 2-0

GORHAM, Maine – The Endicott College Gulls defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies by a score of 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena. Lilly Corso scored the game-winner for Endicott and Samantha Fantasia added an empty-net goal in the final 90 seconds of the game. Casey Moritz made 14 saves in the shutout for the Gulls. Endicott was in the Others Receiving Votes category of the first United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III Top 15 poll of the season.
 
Fifth year senior Haley McKim (Moncton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) made 34 saves in the loss.

Endicott: Casey Moritz (1-0-0):  59:59, zero goals allowed, 14 saves

How It Happened:
  • McKim made 15 saves in the first period and Mortiz made seven to send the teams to the locker room tied at 0-0. Each side had a power play and managed three shots during it but did not convert on the opportunity.
  • Corso's goal came with 2:44 left in the second period when Jenna Seibold collected a loose puck in the Endicott offensive zone and slid a pass to her teammate in front of the net. Corso's initial shot was saved by McKim, but Corso ended up slipping the puck into the net from the scrum that broke out on the rebound.
  • The Huskies were outshot 10-2 in the third period and Fantasia's empty-netter put the game to bed.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The teams played a clean game with only one penalty each in the first period.
  • Endicott led in shots on goal 36-14 and 32-26 in faceoff wins.
  • Senior Jillian Jackson (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Ontario Hockey Academy) went 11-7 on the draw for the Huskies. Teaghan Hall and Fantasia each had nine faceoff wins for Endicott.
  • The Huskies led 20-6 in blocked shots led by four by senior Jess MacLean (Red Point, Nova Scotia).
  • Junior Audrey Donahue (Timberlea, Nova Scotia/ Kimball Union Academy) played well defensively with two blocked shots and hustled to shut down an Endicott breakaway in the third period to keep the deficit at a goal.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies will play their first New England Hockey Conference series of the season next Friday and Saturday at Vermont State University Castleton.
