STANDISH, Maine - Seven players scored as the University of Southern Maine Huskies rolled to a 9-0 win over the Saint Joseph's College (Maine) Monks in a non-conference women's soccer game Wednesday evening at Saint Joseph's Athletics Complex.
Freshman
Madi Sainis (Pierrefonds, Quebec/Saint Thomas) and senior
Emily Johnson (Scaroborough, Maine) each scored their first goal of the season, while Sainis' marker in the 90
th minute established the first goal of her intercollegiate career.
Seniors
Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine) and
Julia McKenna (Windham, Maine) each had two goals for the Huskies, while Gould added a pair of assists in just 45 minutes of action.

Today's game marked the 35
th meeting between the Huskies and Saint Joseph's College. Southern Maine leads the series 20-13-2. The Huskies have won the last four consecutively defeating SJC 6-0 at home in 2023, 4-1 in 2022 in Standish, and 5-0 in 2021 in Gorham.
How It Happened:
- With eight players earning their first start of the 2024 season, and six players earning the first start of their Husky career, Southern Maine took an early lead in the seventh minute when sophomore Kayla O'Connor (Perth, Australia/Hamelin-Laie International School) finished an assist off of the foot fom Sainis. Both O'Connor and Sainis were starting for the first time in their career.
- The 1-0 Husky lead stood through the first half. Despite outshooting the Monks 8-0 (7-0 on target), Monk goalkeeper Ashlyn Guerrette kept her team in the game with six first-half saves.
- Southern Maine wasted little time doubling its lead in the second half. Gould scored in the 48th minute. USM led 4-0 by the 60-minute mark as McKenna completed an assist from Gould I the 56th minute and junior Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) scored her second goal of the season in the 60th minute off of a feed from Johnson.
- Johnson entered the scoresheet with the first goal of her Husky and intercollegiate career in the 74th minute. One of the Huskies' outside backs, Johnson score an unassisted goal for a 5-0 USM advantage.
- The Huskies scored their final four goals in the last 10 minutes of regulation. Gould made it 6-0 in the 82nd off of a feed from senior Kiki Huntress (Kittery Point, Maine/Traip Academy), and McKenna netted her brace in the 87th on an assist from freshman Meghan Przybilla (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony Village).
- Sainis got on the score sheet at 89:11 off of a feed from Gould, before frefshman Makyla Magid (Golden, Colo./Lakewood) scored her fifth goal of the season at 89:58 on another assist from Przybilla. Przybilla is now second on the team with six assists on the season.
