Southern Maine Blanks Rhode Island College 1-0; Przybilla With Game Winner

PROVIDENCE, RI    - Freshman Meghan Przybilla (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony Village) connected on a left-footed volley in the 40th minute to score the game-winning goal and lead the Univeristy of Southern Maine Huskies to a 1-0 win over the Rhode Island College Anchormen in a Little East Conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

The Huskies remain undefeated in the Little East Conference at 4-0, and are unbeaten in their last five games (4-0-1). Southern Maine has outscored its opponents 22-1 during that stretch, and have outscored their opponents 51-14 overall.

The Records:
Southern Maine (9-2-2, 4-0 LEC)
Rhode Island College (6-6-2, 1-3-1 LEC)

Today's game marked the 30th meeting between the Rhode Island College Anchormen and the University of Southern Maine Huskies.  The Huskies lead the overall series 17-11-2. Southern Maine has shutout Rhode Island College in its last three games for a combined score of 7-0.

How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine dominated possession and play in the contest, and registered seven shots and four corner kicks in the opening 20 minutes of play, and finished the half leading 17-1 in shots and 4-1 in corners. However, the Huskies did not break through for a goal until the 40th minute as RIC goalkeeper Chloe Angelone made nine saves in the game.
  • Defensively, Southern Maine had the Anchormen locked down and allowed just one shot in the first half that was easily saved by senior goalkeeper Hunter Stonebraker (Mont Vernon, N.H.).
  • The Huskies broke through for the game-deciding goal off of the left foot of Przybilla, who connected on a one-time volley to the far post.  Przybilla was set up off of a flicked on header from sophomore Kayla O'Connor (Perth, Australia/Heamlin-Laie International School).
  • Ending the first half with a 1-0 lead, Southern Maine continued to control play and added 11 more shots to its total in the second half. However it was all the scoring the Huskies would need as the defense kept RIC locked up for the shutout.

The Goalkeepers:
SM, Hunter Stonebraker (5-1-2), 90:00, 0 GA, 1 Saves
RIC, Chloe Angelone (4-6-2), 90:00, 1 GA, 9 Saves

Inside The Stats:
  • Southern Maine dominated RIC in shots 28-4, and had a 10-1 lead in shots on goal. The Huskies held RIC to one shot attempt until the 85th minute. The Huskies had an 8-3 lead in corner kicks.
  • Stonebraker's shutout is her fourth of the season and sixth of her career. She has a 0.50 goals against average.
  • Przybilla's goal is the fourth of the season for the Huskies' rookie, and the first game-winning goal of her career.  Seven different players have scored a game-winning goal for the Huskies this season.
