Huskies Drop Matches to UMass Dartmouth and Emmanuel at Home

GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine women's volleyball team lost a pair of matches on Saturday falling 3-0 to UMass Dartmouth in Little East Conference action and dropping a 3-1 decision to Emmanuel College. Freshman Macie Ahmer (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) and junior Drew Johnson (Pismo Beach, Cali. /Brewer) recorded double doubles in the match against the Saints. Ahmer recorded 35 assists and Johnson had 14 kills while each player tallied 12 digs.

UMass Dartmouth leads the series 25-11.
 
How It Happened:
  • The Corsairs committed no attack errors in the first set on their way to a 25-12 win and ended the set on a 12-1 run.
  • UMass Dartmouth never trailed in the second set and got out to a 10-3 lead before winning 25-14.
  • The Huskies scored the first three points of the third set before the Corsairs took an 8-7 lead. After a kill by senior Madison Zimmer (Regina, Saskatchewan/Dr. Martin LeBoldus Catholic) tied the score at 8-8 UMass Dartmouth used an 8-2 run to take a six-point lead at 16-10. They then went on to take the set 25-15.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Kate Wade had 12 kills to lead all players. Johnson had the second-most with eight. Zimmer and Olivia Seutter each placed second on their team with seven apiece.
  • Each team had two players record 10 or more digs. Fifth-year senior Sierra Castonguay (Nottingham, N.H./Dover) had a game-leading 14 while Johnson added 10 for the Huskies. Emily Pogorelec had 11 and Allison Pate recorded 10 for the Corsairs.
  • Ahmer recorded 20 assists. Skye Peters led UMass Dartmouth with 15 followed by Sabrina Bordone with 12.
  • Sophomore Darrien Pugsley (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) had three block assists for the Huskies.

Series History:
Today's contest was the first match between the two programs since 2017. This is the first win for the Saints in the series as the Huskies won the first three meetings in 2004, 2015 and 2017.
 
How It Happened:
  • Emmanuel closed out the first set on a 6-0 run to win 25-18 after a 4-0 rally by the Huskies cut the lead to 19-18.
  • The Saints overcame another late deficit to win the second set 27-25 in a tight battle.
  • The Huskies broke an 8-8 tie with a 4-0 run and led the rest of the way for a 25-16 set win to avoid the sweep. The set featured a 7-0 run by Southern Maine that put them ahead 22-12 and in prime position to close out the frame.
  • Southern Maine started the fourth set with four consecutive points and held the lead until a 5-0 run tied the set at 12-12. The lead then switched back-and-forth several times until the Saints prevailed for a 26-24 win to take the match 3-1.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Isabella Marquez accounted for 27 of Emmanuel's 54 kills.
  • Johnson led the Huskies with 14 kills with freshman Ella Koehler (Pickerington, Ohio/Fairfield Christian Academy) placing second with 13 followed by sophomore Anyelis Hernandez (Lawrence, Mass.) with 10.
  • Kason Huynh had 40 assists while Ahmer led the Huskies with 35.
  • Castonguay recorded 16 digs and three aces.
  • Southern Maine led 12-7 in aces led by four from Johnson. Amber Hong's three led the Saints.
  • Fran Ramos Rodriguez, Letitia Bossou and Huynh led the Saints in blocks. Ramos Rodriguez recorded six block assists, Bossou had four and Huynh added a solo block and three block assists.
  • Zimmer had two solo blocks and block assists and Pugsley contributed four block assists and a solo block.
 
Up Next:
The next match for the Huskies will be against Plymouth State University on the road on Wednesday at 5:00 pm.
