Big Third Quarter Leads Keene State Past Southern Maine 5-2


KEENE, N.H. – Grace Bazin scored twice, including a goal in the Owls three-goal third quarter, to lead the Keene State College Owls to a 5-2 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at the Owl Athletic Complex.

Today's game marked the 48th meeting between Keene State College and the University of Southern Maine Huskies.  Southern Maine had won its last three meetings with the Owls, defeating KSC 1-0 in the 2023 LEC Championship game, 5-4 in overtime in the 2023 regular season, and earning a 3-2 win over the Owls in the semifinals of the 2022 Little East Conference Championship tournament.  The Huskies are 5-3 against the Owls in the last eight meetings. KSC leads the overall series, however, 32-15. The loss is the first for the Huskies against a regular season conference opponent since falling 4-2 to Keene State on October 22, 2022.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Southern Maine took the early lead when senior Brooke Carson (Bryant Pond, Maine/Oxford Hills) put the Huskies up 1-0 in the fifth minute after an assist from sophomore Dylan Barr (Phippsburgh, Maine/Morse).
  • Keene State tied the came up before half time when Molly Murray completed the assist from Bazin in the 23rd minute.
  • The Owls opened the third quarter on the front foot, scoring the go-ahead goal in the 32nd minute. Irini Stefanakos scored off of an assist from Grace Seabury.  KSC made it 3-1 in the 33rd minute on Bazin's goal, and then took a commanding 4-1 lead in the 41st on a goal from Meghan Daileanes in the 41st minute.
  • Southern Maine sophomore Norie Tibbetts (Skowhegan, Maine) cut the deficit to 4-2, scoring her fifth goal of the season in the 54th minute, but the Owls answered with another goal from Bazin just before the end of regulation for the 5-2 final.
 
Inside The Statistics:
  • Sophomore Jenessa Foster (Pittsfield, Maine/Maine Central Institute) had five defensive saves for the Huskies. The 2023 Little East Conference Rookie of the Year, Foster has 11 defensive saves so far this season, and has 18 in her career. She has played 33 career games.
  • Carson's goal is her third of the season, and the 40th of her career. Carson has 40 goals, and 17 assists for 97 career points. 
 
 
Up Next:
The Huskies are back home on Tuesday, October 8 (7:00 pm) in non-conference action against Framingham State, before hitting the road against LEC opponent Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday, October 12 (1:00 pm). The Huskies have a quick turnaround and will face Colby Colege on Sunday, October 13 (1:00 pm).
