Early Worcester Goal Sinks Huskies 1-0

GORHAM, Maine – Maggie Nailor scored in the eighth minute and the Worcester State University Lancers defense held en route to a 1-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Thursday night at Hannaford Field.

Tonight's game marked the 27th meeting between the University of Southern Maine and Worcester State University. Worcester now leads the series 14-13.   Southern Maine defeated the Lancers 4-1 at home in 2022, and lost 3-2 in overtime in 2023.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Worcester State scored on its first penalty corner of the game. Kaelin Coleman inserted the ball, and Charlotte MacGregor found the stick of Nailor on the left side, and Nailor hit a hard shot that found the back of the cage.
  • The Huskies finished the first quarter outshooting the Lancers 6-3, and 8-4 at the half, but were unable to equalize.  WSU goalkeeper Madison Ferrara made three saves in the opening half to protect the Lancers' one-goal advantage.
  • The third quarter was all Huskies, as Southern Maine maintained possession and racked up 10 of its 17 penalty corners in the game.  However, the Lancers' defense kept the Huskies off the scoreboard despite a 4-1 lead in shots and a 10-0 lead in penalty corners by USM.
  • The fourth quarter saw more even distribution of possession.  The Lancers played with two-players down after fourth-quarter green cards, but WSU held strong through the final whistle for the 1-0 win
 
Inside The Statistics:
  • Southern Maine led 17-5 in penalty corners and 13-7 in shots.  The Huskies had 7-5 lead in shots on goal. .
 
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine returns to Little East Conference action on Saturday, October 5 (2:00 pm) on the road at Keene State College in a re-match of the 2023 LEC Championship game. The Huskies are back home on Tuesday, October 8 (7:00 pm) in non-conference action against Framingham State, before hitting the road against LEC opponent Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday, October 12 (1:00 pm).
