Bowdoin Pulls Away From Southern Maine 53-39

Vaughan Leads Huskies with 14 points and 8 rebounds

BRUNSWICK, Maine  - Sydney Jones scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds – both game-high totals. – to lead the Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a 53-39 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's basketball game Tuesday evening at Morrell Gymnasium.
 
Southern Maine sophomore Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia) led the Huskies with 14 points and eight rebounds. Seniors Tamrah Gould (Manchester, N.H.) and Tara Flanders (Windham, Maine) each had eight points. Flanders chipped in with five rebounds.

Today's game marked 56th meeting between the University of Southern  Maine and the Bowdoin College Polar Bears. While Southern Maine leads the overall series 33-24, Bowdoin has won the last 10 against the Huskies. Southern Maine last defeated the Polar Bears on November 27, 2012 72-58.  
 
How It Happened:
  • Ahead 30-23 after the first half, Bowdoin used a strong third quarter, doubling its lead 45-31. Outscoring the Huskies 15-8 in the third, Bowdoin's Sydney Jones scored seven of the Polar Bears 15 points in the frame.
  • Gould drained back-to-back threes to start the fourth for the Huskies trimming their deficit to single digits, 45-37, but Bowdoin responded with an 8-0 run led by five points from Jones on a traditional three-point play, and a three-pointer over the next 1:47, swelling the Polar Bear lead to 53-37 with 5:07 remaining in the game.
  • USM's Vaughan halted the Bowdoin surge connecting on two free throws at the 4:27 mark to make it 53-39, but the Polar Bears scored the final three points of the game for the 53-39 final.   
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Huskies were a perfect 15-for-15 from the free throw line in the game. Vaughan was an outstanding 10-for-10 from the free throw line in the effort.
  • Neither team shot particularly well from the field.  Bowdoin shot 31.1 percent (19-for-61) from the floor, while Southern Maine shot 19.6 percent (11-for-56). 
  • Bowdoin scored 24 points off of 21 Southern Maine turnovers.  The Huskies scored 12 points off of 15 Bowdoin turnovers.  Bowdoin dominated the paint outscoring USM 26-14. 
  • Led by three from Maria Belardi, the Polar Bears blocked eight shots.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies return to Little East Conference action at home on Thursday (1:00 pm) against No. 25 UMass Dartmouth. Southern Maine is on the road for its next two contents at VTSU-Castleton (January 13, 1:00 pm) and Plymouth State (January 17, 5:30 pm).
