Five Huskies Score in 5-1 Win Over NEC

GORHAM, Maine – Five different members of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's ice hockey team scored goals in a 5-1 New England Hockey Conference win over the New England College Pilgrims on Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena. Senior Amanda Crowley (South Yarmouth, Mass./Tilton School) scored one of the Huskies' goals to extend her goal streak to three games. Sophomore Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) assisted on two goals and junior goaltender Ellie Fredenburg (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge and Latin) made 28 saves and notched her first career assist on an empty-net goal. The Huskies snapped NEC's four-game winning streak with the victory.

The Records:
New England College: 5-10-0 (1-8-0 NEHC)
Southern Maine: 8-6-1 (5-2-1 NEHC)

Series History:
Today's game marked the 44th meeting between NEC and Southern Maine. The Huskies lead 23-18-3 and have now won the last eight games in the series.

The Goaltender:
NEC: Amy Donnelly (4-3-0), 59:24, four goals allowed, 16 saves
Southern Maine: Ellie Fredenburg (3-2-0), 60:00, one goal allowed, 28 saves

How It Happened:
  • The Huskies put eight shots on goal in the first period but were kept off the scoreboard by Donnelly. The Pilgrims also benefited from blasts by juniors Amelie St-Amant (Cornwall, Ontario/ Ontario Hockey Academy) and Jess MacLean (Red Point, Nova Scotia/Rankin School of the Narrows) that hit the crossbar.
  • Crowley opened the scoring 52 seconds into the second period off her own rebound for her third goal in as many games. She leads the Huskies with four goals on the season.
  • The Huskies added a second goal with 42 seconds left in the period when freshman Ellie Eigner (Bowling Green, Ohio/ South Lyon East) lifted a shot over Donnelly after a pass from Stewart on a power-play. The Pilgrims got one back with a Meadow Gilchrist goal from Olivia Lindberg and Gabrielle Iwinski 31 seconds later to enter the second intermission down 2-1.
  • Junior Madison Chagnon (St. Albans, Vt./Rice Memorial) made the score 3-1 seven minutes into the third with a goal that was assisted by Crowley and senior Maddy Young (Westford, Vt.). Chagnon now has three goals on the season.
  • Stewart picked up her second assist of the game on a goal by MacLean that put the Huskies up 4-1 with 7:40 remaining. A tripping penalty put NEC on the power-play and the Pilgrims pulled their goalie with 4:32 left in regulation. Their gambit led to three shots on goal that were all saved by Fredenburg, who picked up her first career point with an assist on an empty-netter by Jordan Colbert (Manomet, Mass./Plymouth South). The goal is Colbert's first point of the season.

Inside The Stats:
  • Colbert became the 14th Husky to score a goal this season.
  • Eigner's goal served as the game-winner, the first of her career. Southern Maine has had a different player net the game-winning goal in all eight of its wins this season.
  • The teams split faceoffs evenly with 24 apiece and both teams also blocked 16 shots.
  • NEC failed to score on its four power-plays while the Huskies went 1-for-2 and had a short-handed goal.

Up Next:
