GORHAM, Maine – Senior
Liz Cote (Conway, N.H./Kennett) scored a game-high 21 points, knocking down a career-high seven three-pointers, to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 70-51 win over the WestConn Wolves in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.
Cote was 7-for-10 from three, recording her second 20-point game of the season. She added four assists and two rebounds. Senior Tara Flander (Windham, Maine) and sophomore
Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia) each had 10 points. Vaughan added a team-high eight rebounds, three assists and three steals in a strong performance off of the bench. Senior
Tamrah Gould (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) added eight points, and a career-best six assists for the Huskies.
Gabrielle Franks led the Wolves with 19 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three blocked shots. Franks was 8-for-16 from the field to led three Wolves in double-figures scoring. Nicole Vivian had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four assists, while Nicole Peralta tossed in 11 points.

Today's game marked the 69
th meeting between the WestConn Wolves and the University of Southern Maine Huskies. Southern Maine leads the overall series 50-19, and is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings against WestConn. USM and WestConn split the 2022-23 series, with USM defeating the Wolves 71-54 at home.
How It Happened:
- The Huskies started off hot going 3-for-3 from three-point range in their first three possessions. Gould hit the first three on an assist from Cote, while Cote knocked down the first of her seven for a quick 9-4 lead with 7:26 in the opening quarter to play.
- The Wolves tied the game up at 11 at the 5:02 mark on a layup from Franks and a three from Peralta before a three from Cote started a 12-2 run to close out the first. Vaughan scored the Huskies final seven points of the first for a solid 23-13 lead.
- Southern Maine continued to hit from long range in the second. The Huskies outscored WestConn 13-7 in the first five minutes of the second quarter. Cote struck twice from three in the run, while Gould knocked down one of her own. The final five of the second was no different as Cote made another three three-pointers and USM closed the half on an 11-4 run capped by a layup from junior Gabby Green (Manchester, Maine/Maranacook) for a commanding 47-24 lead at the half.
- Southern Maine started the third with a three from Flanders, taking its largest lead of the game 50-24 at 9:17. Both teams played evenly in the quarter, matching each other point for point. Flanders scored six of her 10 in the third to pace the Huskies.
- Up 61-38 to start the fourth, Southern Maine led comfortably throughout. WestConn outscored USM 13-9 in the final frame, but never got closer than 19 points.

- Cote's 7-for-10 effort from three is tied for second in single-game records. She is the first player to connect on seven three-pointers in a game since Kaylie DeMillo (2007-2011) made seven against Plymouth State on February 9, 2010. The Huskies' single-game record is eight and is held by Husky Hall of Famer Stacey Kent (2005-2009). Kent connected on eight threes against UMass Dartmouth on February 20, 2007.
- Southern Maine scored 20 of its 70 points off of WestConn turnovers. The Huskies had 14 steals in the game, and the Wolves committed 21 turnovers.
- Southern Maine had a slim 39-38 lead on the boards. The Huskies' bench outscored the Wolves' bench 26-2. Vaughan's 10 points led the way.
