McKim Breaks Program Career Saves Record in 3-1 loss to Norwich

GORHAM, Maine – Senior goaltender Haley McKim (Moncton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) became the all-time saves leaders for the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's ice hockey team on Friday night thanks to a 27-save effort in a 3-1 loss to No. 8 Norwich University. McKim surpassed the mark of 1,937 saves set by Karen Jamnik (2000-2004) with eight saves in the first period. Despite McKim's efforts in net and good defense by the Huskies, Norwich came away with a 3-1 win. Madison Anderson had a goal and an assist for Norwich.

The Goaltender:
Norwich: Leocadia Clark (7-3-1), 59:36, one goal allowed, 18 saves
Southern Maine: Haley McKim (5-4-1), 60:00, three goals allowed, 27 saves
 
How It Happened:
  • McKim made saves on all  eight shots she faced in the first period and Clark stopped each of the three shots she faced at the opposite end of the ice. Sophomore Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) had the best chance for the Huskies in the period but her one-timer shot went wide in the final minutes of the stanza.
  • Norwich's Jenna Nikles scored to break the 0-0 draw 10:41 into the second period thanks to an assists from Anderson and Lauren Tuzik. A slashing penalty 1:15 later put the Huskies on the power-play and 30 second after that senior Amanda Crowley (South Yarmouth, Mass./Tilton School) deflected a Jess MacLean (Red Point, Nova Scotia/Rankin School of the Narrows) shot into the back of the net to tie the game. Senior Maddy Young (Westford, Vt.) also had an assist in addition to MacLean's.
  • The Cadets pulled ahead seven minutes into the third period with a goal by Marja Linzbichler a Rylie McIntyre pass found her in front of the net. Anderson made the score 3-1 in Norwich's favor four minutes later to give the Cadets some breathing room.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The game featured 10 penalties but just one goal on the power-play. Norwich didn't convert any of their four chances while the Huskies went one-for-three with the extra skater.
  • Norwich led in faceoff wins 35-22.

The Huskies are back in action tomorrow at 3:00 pm when they host New England College.
