Huskies Come from Behind to Defeat UNE 5-3

GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's ice hockey team overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat the University of New England Nor'easters 5-3 on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup. Sophomore Caroline Thompson (Crapaud, Prince Edward Island/Mount Academy) scored a shorthanded goal to give the Huskies a 4-3 lead and then assisted on an empty net goal from Saige MacLeod (Dryden, Ontario) to put the Nor'easters away. MacLeod also had a goal in the contest. Junior Amelie St-Amant (Cornwall, Ontario/ Ontario Hockey Academy) and senior Maddy Young (Westford, Vt.) each had two assists.

How It Happened:
  • Amanda Forziati netted the first goal of the game with help from Lainie Lemieux and Anna O'Neill just under five minutes into the first period. Her tally was the only score of the period.
  • UNE's Eliana Kane was sent to the penalty box for hooking in the final seconds of the period and after her penalty was complete, she snuck behind the Huskies' defense and gave her team a 2-0 lead just over two minutes into the second. The Huskies got a goal back when freshman Morgan Rochefort (Bangor, Maine/Nichols College) scored her first goal as Husky in a four-on-four situation. Rochefort's first Southern Maine goal was assisted by MacLeod and St-Amant after a faceoff win by sophomore Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy).
  • Senior Amanda Crowley (South Yarmouth, Mass./Tilton School) scored her second goal of the season 38 seconds in the third period to tie the game at 2-2. Her first goal also came against the Nor'Easters in the season-opener. Junior Ally Stymiest (Moncton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) logged the assist for her first point of the season.
  • Kane put her team back ahead 3-2 with her second goal of the game thanks to assists from Kelly McCarthy and Danielle McCarthy. The UNE lead only lasted for 28 seconds before freshman Shannon Murphy (Pembroke, Mass./Brewster Academy) fired a shot between Corcoran's legs for her first career goal. Young and St-Amant assisted on the play.
  • With 12 minute to go and UNE on the power-play, junior Madison Chagnon (St. Albans, Vt./Rice Memorial) intercepted a pass in the Huskies' own end and set up Young in the front of the net. Their attempt was unsuccessful but Young was able to secure the puck in the corner and find an open Thompson in the middle of the ice who then scored her third goal of the season.
  • Thompson blocked a shot by UNE in the final 30 seconds and threw the puck towards the empty net where McLeod gave it a tap to make sure it went in the net for the 5-3 final.
Inside The Stats:
  • Rochefort and Murphy became the 12th and 13th goal scorers for the Huskies this season.
  • UNE went 1-for-5 on the power-play and the Huskies went 0-for-2.
  • The Huskies went 35-for-60 on faceoffs with graduate student Jordan Colbert (Manomet, Mass./Plymouth South) winning a game-high 13 draws.
