Delloiacono Reaches 500 Career Kills as Huskies Spilt Home Tri-Match

GORHAM, Maine – Senior Brianna Delloiacono (Moodus, Conn./ Nathan Hale-Ray) became the 12th player in the University of Southern Maine women's volleyball history to record 500 career kills on Saturday totaling 24 on the day as the Huskies went 1-1. Southern Maine opened the day by dropping a five-set slugfest against Eastern Connecticut State University in each team's first Little East Conference game of the season. They then defeated Fitchburg State University 3-1 in the final match of the day.
 
Game One
 
The Records:
Eastern Connecticut State: 6-4 (1-0 LEC)
Southern Maine: 3-8 (0-1 LEC)
 
Series History:
The game was the 25th meeting between the two teams and Eastern Connecticut now leads the series 22-3.
 
How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine took the first set 25-21 and closed out the set with four consecutive points to break a 21-21 tie.
  • In the second set the Warrior fought back from a 17-8 deficit and won 27-25 to even the match at one set apiece.
  • The Huskies opened set number three on a 5-0 run and never trailed while taking the set 25-22.
  • Eastern Connecticut overcame what was once a seven-point Husky lead to force a tiebreaker by winning the fourth set 25-22.
  • In the tiebreaker set the Warriors pulled out a 15-13 win to win the match three sets to two.
Inside The Stats:
  •  Delloiacono reached the 500 career kill milestone in the second set and finished the match with 10 total kills. She also logged 16 digs.
  • Junior Isabella Smith (Merrimack, N.H.) had a game-leading 14 kills followed by Eastern Connecticut's Brooke Praskievicz and Taylor Thompson with 13 and 12.
  • Senior Sierra Castonguay (Nottingham, N.H./Dover) and Cassie Parmelee tied for the lead in digs with 19 apiece.
  • Castonguay also had eight service aces in the match while Parmelee had seven.
  • The assist leaders for each team also matched each other's total as Liz Squier and freshman Cassidy Weiher (Aurora, Colo./ Cherokee Trail) each notched 32.

Fitchburg State: 4-6
Southern Maine: 4-8
 
Series History:
The two teams have now played six times with the Huskies winning four of the six.
 
How It Happened:
  • The Huskies won 25-19 in the first set to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • Southern Maine was down 23-21 but fought back to win the set 26-24 and go up 2-0.
  • The Falcons fueled their comeback hopes by winning the third set 25-22 after scoring the final five points of the set.
  • Southern Maine scored the first two points in the fourth set and never relished the lead to win the set 25-13.
Inside The Stats:
  • Three Huskies had double-digit kills totals led by Delloiacono's 14. Smith recorded 11 kills while junior Madison Zimmer (Regina, SK,/Dr. Martin LeBoldus Catholic) had a career-high 10.
  • Stephanie Sardella and Samantha Mirra each had nine for Fitchburg State.
  • Jessica Greco led the Falcons in digs with 23 and Castonguay paced Southern Maine with 17.
  • Weiher led all players in assists with 37 followed by Emily Gelinas with 25.
  • The Huskies recorded a season-high 49 kills beating their previously best high of 47 which came in the match against Eastern Connecticut.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies will travel south to Boston to play Suffolk University on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm in a non-conference bout.
