Late Goals Propel Western New England Past Southern Maine 3-1

Western New England Athletic Communications adjusted statistics for errors on 9.23 (8:28 PM). 

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.  –  Down 1-0 at the half, the Western New England Golden Bears scored three second half goals to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-1 in a non-conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium.

Tonight's game marked the first meeting in program history for the University of Southern Maine against the Western New England University Golden Bears. 
 
How It Happened:
  • Sophomore forward Gabby Maines (Waterville, Maine) scored her first goal of 2023 in the 26th minute to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. 
  • The Huskies defense kept the game 1-0 in their advantage making three defensive saves, including critical plays from senior Jordan Cummings (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little), junior Izzy Hurlburt (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) and freshman Jenessa Foster (Pittsfield, Maine/Maine Central Institute.
  • WNEU broke through for the equalizer late in the third with as Analise Trani scored her second goal of the season. 
  • With the game tied at 1-1 in the fourth, the Golden Bears scored twice in a two-minute span for the 3-1 win. Kara Edwards scored both goals for WNEU in the 52nd and 54th minute.

Up Next:
Southern Maine travels to Johnson & Wales on Sunday (2:00 pm) for a non-conference game.  The Huskies are back at home on Tuesday, September 26 (7:00 pm) against Endicott College before opening their Little East Conference schedule at home against Keene State (3:00 pm).  The Huskies will be honoring the 20th anniversary of their 2003 Little East Conference Championship team during the game.
