Maine Maritime Holds Off Southern Maine 2-1


 CASTINE, Maine  – Maine Maritime Academy scored a pair of first half goals, and were able to make that stand despite increased second half pressure, to earn a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's soccer game Sunday afternoon at Ritchie Field.

Today's game marked the 19th meeting between the University of Southern Maine and Maine Maritime Academy.  Southern Maine leads the overall series 11-5-2, but Maine Maritime has won the last two consecutively, defeating the Huskies 1-0 in 2022 at Hannaford Field. 
 
How It Happened:
  • Reuben Harrison put the Mariners up early scoring in the ninth minute off of an assist from John-John Dickenson.
  • Harrison helped MMA doubled its advantage in the 31st minute assisting on an Aiden Burr goal.  Both Harrison and Burr's strikes when to the upper right corner of the frame.
  • In the second half, Southern Maine pressured for a goal and outshot the Mariners 11-5 (5-1 on frame), but were unable to get by MMA goalkeeper Regan Moynihan who made four second half saves.
  • Southern Maine freshman Jack Brady (Jensen Beach, Fla.) broke up the shutout in the 87th minute converting a penalty kick for his third goal of the 2023 season.

Inside The Stats:
  • Outshot 7-6 in the first half, Southern Maine outshot the Mariners 11-5 in the second half to for a 17-13 advantage in the game.  Both teams were even with six shots on goal.
  • Brady's goal ties him for the team lead with Noah Perry (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) this season. Brady leads the Huskies in overall points with nine on three goals and a team-best three assists.
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine returns to Hannaford Field on Wednesday (7:00 pm) against Bowdoin College and then hosts UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (1:00 pm) in a Little East Conference game.
